In this essay, I will be analysing the 2008, £15 million Hovis TV advertisement. Filmed in Liverpool with a cast of over 750 extras, director Ringan Ledwidge portrays a young boy (13 year old Brian Mackie) buying a loaf of bread in 1886, which was when the first Hovis loaf of bread was sold, and then travelling with the bread tucked under him arm, through 12 decades in British History. The concept behind the advert is to show that Hovis has been around for 122 years and is a British Institution. For this reason, the advert lasts 122 seconds; each second depicting each year. The product is shown to be just as good, hence the slogan “As good today as it’s always been”.…

Advertisements are all over the place. Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape them. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. And of course they are selling their product. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the advertiser’s study all the ways that they can attract the person’s attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products…

This advertisement is found in a magazine, as part of a campaign against rape. The advertisement is glued together, which forces the viewer to rip the pages apart in order to view the whole ad. Once open it reveals a woman’s legs spread apart on a bed, with dark shadows over the woman’s body. There is limited text stating, “If you have to use force, it’s rape”, and the POWA logo, which is the organization that sponsored/made the advertisement. The purpose is to demonstrate the parallels of forcefully opening the pages to forcefully having sex, which is rape. The advertisement uses; physical representation, emotional connection, power of organization to create a response of anger, and personal relation to rape.…

We live in a fast paced society that is ruled by mass media. Every day we are bombarded by images of, perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us like a slide show. These ideas and images are imbedded in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audience openly and subliminally, and target them with their product. They allude to the fact that in order to be like the people in this advertisement you must use their product. This is not a new approach, nor is it unique to this generation, but never has it been as widely used as it is today. There is and old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" and what better way to tell someone about a product than with all one thousand words, that all fit on one page. Take for example this ad for Hennessy cognac found in Cosmopolitan, which is a high, priced French liquor. This ad is claiming in more ways than one that Hennessy is an upscale cognac and is "appropriately complex" as well as high-class liquor. There are numerous subliminal connotations contingent to this statement.…

O’Neil mention in his article, ‘The Language of Advertising,” advertisers create in consumers a sense of need for products. I think it is not ethical for advertisers to create such a sense when their products are generic and do not differ from those of the competition. It is common that consumers don’t have too much knowledge about the products that they are buying, and they relay on the information that are provided by the company. If the information is not accurate and correct, which mean the advertisers deceive customers to buy things. For example, some gasoline companies claim that their gasoline is more efficient than the other brands’. Not everyone is a chemical engineer, who can check the formula of the gasoline to see if it is more…

Women have been fixing themselves up to look glamorous for quite a while now. Whether it’s to impress a guy or walk down a run way, the reasons are endless. When looking at magazines there are different ads for styles of makeup. Makeup is one of the few things that are world-wid. Even before make up products were sold the Greeks and Native American tribes would paint their faces with natural paints such as plant pigments or crushed minerals mixed in saps, oils, or muds. This was usually done for special rituals and outings. This means about 6,000 years ago women just like us were painting their faces for the same reason women put make up on now. Be honest, Women aren’t going to put makeup on to sit at home by themselves. What is it about makeup advertisements that make women want to get dolled up?…
