English 101 Reflection
Nursing has been given the idea that a lot of writing is not needed after nursing school, but that assumption is incorrect. Nurses have a lot of daily task, many of them need good writing and comprehension skills which can be developed in English 101 and English 102 classes. Core classes in general will help and the foundations that are taught in those two classes can help make one successful in any career, nursing included. Nursing needs writing in these tasks: creating a daily plan for the patient, writing prescriptions (depending on which position of a nurse), creating a plan for the patient after being discharged, and for communication through emails. With the help received in English 101 and the help I will be receiving in English 102 …show more content…
English 101 however, helped me improved the areas in which I was weak in from high school. Before, it was difficult to find the bigger meaning of an article, poem, or any form of writing in general. However, with the help from taking this course I was able to figure out how to add meaning to the essay. I also learned how to add evidence and analysis them better in my body paragraphs as well. It was difficult in the past, but now I gained skills such as outlining, writing rough drafts and the organization needed for a successful essay. I hope in English 102 that I will use my English 101 skills and be even more skilled in my essay writing. I also hope to learn more about adding evidence within the paragraphs and honing in the essay to make it all flow together. Also in English 102 I hope that I will learn to be more confident with my essays. I have talked in a couple of assignments where my confidence makes me question whether or not to add certain analysis into essays which sometimes may have made my grade not as good as it could have been. In English 102, I hope I will not question myself as much and show more confidence. I also wish to eliminate repetition in English 102. I have received many comments that I repeat my analysis a lot and that also cuts of some points of my grade. I need to continue the analysis more rather than just repeat it in a different way. With these two core English classes that I have/will take, I know that my foundation in writing will be

Armin Greder’s ‘The Island’ is a picture book published August 2007, explores the negative aspects of belonging through alienation an outsider’s perspective of not belonging. The text uncovers an undesirable experience particularly the migrant experience. It follows a strange man entering a foreign island where he is unwelcomed and quickly judged based on his appearance. The cover of the book shows an intimating barrier around the island, which looks, dark and uninviting. This wall is a metaphor of the attitudes given off by the islanders towards the man, which are also unapproachable and unpleasant. This effect brings about the feelings of alienation experienced by the man, reflecting the negative aspects of belonging to a group or community. Throughout the text the islanders are drawn additionally threatening, as they are large, dark and armed. This is contrasted with the man’s petite frame and lack of clothing leaving him vulnerable and abnormal. Through this use of size and colour a direct link can be made between the man’s inability to belong and his distinctive appearance. This portrays to the audience how much society impacts a person’s experience of belonging or not belonging. Within the text, the islander’s attitude towards the man is prejudice and hostile. As the islanders say “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it here, so far away from his own kind”, negative connotations are revealed in the words “own kind”. This immediately tells the audience that this man is unlike the rest of society, displaying the effect of appearance on a person’s ability to assimilate into a new surrounding.…

I use to think that being a teacher was going to be a short eight hours of teaching and being with children. Having summers off made being a teacher seem a lot more beneficial to. Being a teacher seemed to be the easiest career choice out there for me. After viewing the second grade classroom in Shepherdstown Elementary it is safe to say that I have changed my opinion of teaching. There is unquestionably another side to the world of a teacher that can only be seen inside a classroom. Watching the students made me realize that being a teacher will no doubt carry some difficulties but, it will all pay off in the end. Observing has made me realize that there is more to teaching, the classroom, and what goes on inside.…

When it comes to writing papers, I usually have a difficult time getting started. I sometimes have trouble with certain topics, getting the general concept, and then turning it into a writing that will get my point across. I feel as if I’m not very creative with my words as I should be without sounding so scattered brained and lost. I was a little nervous when entering English 1102, after having such a difficult time in English 1101 online. At first I did feel at ease but once we got to doing research on a particular food and the articles, I did have some challenging moments. In in the end I did pull my works together and I plan on sharing some of my reflections while taking a look back on a couple of my papers.…

I am fluent in French, but that's not going to do me any good. I can read the handwriting on the wall. Mexicans are prouder of their heritage than Americans are which means English will soon become a dead language. So next week I'm going out to San Diego State and see if I can enroll in just one class for starters - Spanish 101. I'm telling you, if you've got kids get them into Spanish classes…

English 101 has been an amazing class and I feel like I have grown more than I expected. I was apprehensive about taking an English class because I have been away from school for almost seventeen years. I have not written an essay since 1996 and I knew many things have changed. I was especially concerned with citations. However, I found myself being able to work though citations with little effort.…

This is my second year at Winthrop. I transferred from Western Carolina University, and their English 101 class is like this course. It was about perfecting argument style writing, so I feel as though this class will partially feel like a repeat for me. However, we did not focus on learning to read, think, and write critically. I do believe this class will help with all of that, especially with reading. A lot of the time when I read, I feel like I am not understanding or comprehending what the author is saying very well. This could be due to lack of reading in the past several years, but also because of my lack of comprehension and critical reading skills.…

One of my more enriching experiences occurred during my freshman year of high school. For years, I strove for straight A's, and for years I received them. Over time I constructed a mentality, and underlying self-confidence that I would receive an A no matter what. Due to my over-confidence, I was under the impression that I would not have to put forth much effort; however, near the conclusion of the second semester, I had a B in Pre-AP English 9. Despite my last push to earn a 90% in the class with the concluding assignments of the semester, my grade was finalized lower than I had wished for. It felt as if a five pound ball of lead materialized in the pit of my stomach. This experience, at first, devastated me to the fullest extent, and I…

Coming to the University of Alabama, I knew that I had to take English 101, English Composition and I dreaded it since I have always been a poor writer. Throughout my entire career as a student, I always worried about upcoming writing assignments. Stressing about such assignments would delay my motivational drive to write and led to procrastination and poor performance on assignments due to writing under a time crunch. Instead of dread, taking English 101 turned out to be a great benefit since now writing is no longer the all-encompassing black hole of fear that it once was.…

It is getting close to that time when we begin to fill the AP English roster for next year. This year, we will not be testing in for the course, rather we will be relying upon a student's past performance in ELA, the overall GPA, and also previous teacher recommendations. I have just received the list of students who requested AP Literature for the 2017-18 school year, and I am forwarding this list to you to see if there are any students that you recognize on this list who absolutely do not have the skills or acumen for the rigors of the course. The counselors are checking on the GPA status of these students, but I would also like to know from your classroom experience with any of these people if there is anyone on this list that should…

During this English 111 class I have learned how to become a better writer and how to plan out my essays before I write them. My attendance in the class I think has been well, I was always in class unless I had an emergency or illness. I rate myself in my attendance an 8 because I would always come unless I had a reason not to. I was active in class discussions most of the time and kept up with doing my lessons. In being active in class discussions I rate myself as a 7 because I could have participated more than I did and been more interactive in the discussions we had. I would most of the time come to class prepared, but sometimes I would leave my computer at home, but the class would have computers for people without a computer to use. I would rate myself a 6 in this area because I always forget things and losing stuff and need to improve mostly in this area.…

I have been a student at Northern Michigan University for one year now as well as English 111 for one semester, and for that time being I have grown and learned so much more than I could have imagined. It was a rough road coming into college not really know a lot about english, especially with having a pretty elementary writing style. It was during my “Biographies of Things” research paper, I learned to do powerful research as well as open-minded voice, but I still need work on the structure and transitions in my papers.…

On my first day of English 102-06 I was kind of nervous. I really did not know what to expect. Especially once I meet my professor he seemed a bit intimidating. However, I still wanted to challenge myself. He gave all of his students the option to drop his class if we were not ready. He mentioned that the work would be intense. I still was interest in taking this class although the said all of this. I thought to myself this should be easy. Since I passed English 101, I thought it couldn’t be any worse. I was in such a surprise. In English 101 you’re doing more essay than anything, which isn’t that hard. In English 102-06 it’s more of reading texts that you really don’t understand. It is intense but in a good way.…
