English 101 Reflection
Coming to the University of Alabama, I knew that I had to take English 101, English Composition and I dreaded it since I have always been a poor writer. Throughout my entire career as a student, I always worried about upcoming writing assignments. Stressing about such assignments would delay my motivational drive to write and led to procrastination and poor performance on assignments due to writing under a time crunch. Instead of dread, taking English 101 turned out to be a great benefit since now writing is no longer the all-encompassing black hole of fear that it once was. Looking back, I notice how much I have changed in terms of my fear and anxiety of writing. At the beginning of the fall semester, I was very anxious about the anticipated …show more content…
The major problem areas that still need more improvement are grammar, word choice, spelling and transitions/connections to sustain focus in my writing. In nearly all of my essays, I had grammatical errors, awkward word choice, and punctuation errors but these errors showed most clearly in my Argumentative Synthesis essay. The essay required us to analyze four texts on the same topic and then build our own argument based on that topic. I did poorly on this paper because the majority of errors on my papers were the results of poor grammar and misspelling. For example, I spelled the character’s name wrong from the movie Brave. I spelled it “Merrida” when it’s supposed to be spelled Merida. I can improve on spelling errors by paying more attention when reviewing my paper, going to the writing center, or get someone else to help me edit it so I will have a second pair of eyes to catch errors. This was also a factor of rushing through the assignment and not dedicating enough time to the assignment for review and revision. Another major area that I need to work on is to write transition sentences and connection sentences to better link my main points and keep focused on my thesis. I often fail to follow my thesis development and provide specific examples followed by analysis to support my claim. This is a key issue in my writing as I tend to lose focus and I do not follow up on my quotes with analysis to provide evidence to my readers. This featured greatly in my argumentative synthesis essay. For example I used “Most girls wouldn’t want to buy a tom boy looking doll with a bow and arrow.” In this paper, I didn’t back up this claim and I didn’t provide the reader with specific

I am improving in revising my own essay. I have also noticed I have improved on analysis where I had trouble with. At the beginning of this quarter I would usually put one sentence or two and now I am getting the hang of analysis. Also, I am improving in Works cited. This time I think I did well in the organization because I put the archetypes in chronological order, but also a repetition of archetypes. For example, good, bad, good, bad because in life there is always obstacles and it is not always going to be good times. Overall, strengths were the length requirement, which I think I exceeded to do more than the minimum requirement that was 4 pages, improving in MLA format, and citing sources. I have improved in grammar and organization. I think I have improved in analysis and also in my analysis conclusion. My weaknesses, I felt were the paragraphs that did not relate back to my thesis and also the shapeshifter paragraph was not…

I changed several things in my paper starting with my attention grabber. I changed the whole sentence into something more attractive to my readers. I thought my attention grabber was to boring. I changed the extra space I had in my paper which I didn’t know how to until now. I changed a few words that I mistakenly added instead of the right word. I also changed the sentences from my second paragraph. I excluded using first person “us” since it is informal to use when writing college essays. I deleted the last sentences from my second paragraph which didn’t make sense and added something that did make sense with my paragraph. I had a run on sentence which I made them into two separate sentences. In my third paragraph I explained my first sentence which was a good idea I wrote. I would like feedback on the mistakes I corrected and anything else would be great to know.…

What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this: In future, instead of getting paralysis, or worrying that what I am writing about is not valid, I need to use what knowledge I have, back it up with theory and be confident that this is what’s needed. It would be better to get an essay in on time, than delay submitting it due to worry that it isn’t ‘good enough’.…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

When it comes to writing papers, I usually have a difficult time getting started. I sometimes have trouble with certain topics, getting the general concept, and then turning it into a writing that will get my point across. I feel as if I’m not very creative with my words as I should be without sounding so scattered brained and lost. I was a little nervous when entering English 1102, after having such a difficult time in English 1101 online. At first I did feel at ease but once we got to doing research on a particular food and the articles, I did have some challenging moments. In in the end I did pull my works together and I plan on sharing some of my reflections while taking a look back on a couple of my papers.…

I have several areas that were difficult for me. The areas I know that I need improvement on are developing the outline points into body paragraphs clearly, narrowing down my points and not trying to put too much information into an essay. Another area that is difficult for me is reviewing another’s work and trying not to sound too mean or even nice with my comments.…

English 101 has been an amazing class and I feel like I have grown more than I expected. I was apprehensive about taking an English class because I have been away from school for almost seventeen years. I have not written an essay since 1996 and I knew many things have changed. I was especially concerned with citations. However, I found myself being able to work though citations with little effort.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

Some changes that I have made to this document are for example, strengthening the rhetorical appeals, cutting out sentences that were not useful, and also making the essay more direct. This shows my development as a conscious writer because I was able to take comments that I received and put them into action. Not only that, I was able to read over my essay and catch mistakes that I did not see when I first submitted this assignment in the beginning of the semester. In these final revisions I thought I was good at being able to better specify certain problems to make my argument more understandable. Also I thought I was efficiently able to re-read the essay and find sentences that did not have to be in the essay because they were either repeater,…

English 101 however, helped me improved the areas in which I was weak in from high school. Before, it was difficult to find the bigger meaning of an article, poem, or any form of writing in general. However, with the help from taking this course I was able to figure out how to add meaning to the essay. I also learned how to add evidence and analysis them better in my body paragraphs as well. It was difficult in the past, but now I gained skills such as outlining, writing rough drafts and the organization needed for a successful essay. I hope in English 102 that I will use my English 101 skills and be even more skilled in my essay writing. I also hope to learn more about adding evidence within the paragraphs and honing in the essay to make it all flow together. Also in English 102 I hope that I will learn to be more confident with my essays. I have talked in a couple of assignments where my confidence makes me question whether or not to add certain analysis into essays which sometimes may have made my grade not as good as it could have been. In English 102, I hope I will not question myself as much and show more confidence. I also wish to eliminate repetition in English 102. I have received many comments that I repeat my analysis a lot and that also cuts of some points of my grade. I need to continue the analysis more rather than just repeat it in a different way. With these two core English classes that I have/will take, I know that my foundation in writing will be…
