Police Brutality When one thinks of a cop what should come to mind is “hero”. They should be a sign of safety. Although now in this day and age it is no longer true. Now cops are seen as people you want to stay away from, people are afraid of them. Cops are now abusing, assaulting, and killing innocent people, this is called police brutality. Police brutality can be caused by policeman’s ability to assume everyone is up to no good, racism, and thinking they have the power to do whatever they want, and it results in falsely accused young adults, death, abuse of power by troubling the lives of others. Police brutality has not just started in the past year as many have been aware, but this type of brutality has been around ever since the formation of Police, and has continued into the Industrial Revolution, the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement and after the September 11 attacks. Although it seems that recently only African Americans have been the main targets, really anyone regardless of race, or gender can become a victim of police brutality. Unfortunately, even though what the police are doing is wrong and illegal, many of the complaints by the civilians and families of lost victims are going un investigated. Many officials believe that the police and anyone working for the justice system have the authority to use force when they feel is necessary or when feeling threatened. Although everyone has the right to self-defense, word has to be said when that right is being overused.
In the past year, more than fifty percent of the victims involved in police brutality have been African American, and or other minority groups such as Latino’s. The case that sparked this outrage between the police and citizens was the death of Eric Garner of Staten Island, Ny, who died of a chokehold given by a police officer. This death in particular caused riots and protests, due to the victim being innocent of any illegal crimes
