Abstract
This paper presents a single phase digital prepaid energy meter based on two microcontrollers and a single phase energy meter IC. This digital prepaid energy meter does not have any rotating parts. The energy consumption is calculated using the output pulses of the energy meter chip and the internal counter of microcontroller (ATmega32). A microcontroller (ATtiny13) is used as a smart card and the numbers of units recharged by the consumers are written in it. A relay system has been used which either isolates or establishes the connection between the electrical load and energy meter through the supply mains depending upon the units present in the smart card.Energy consumption (kWh), maximum demand (kW), total unit recharged (kWh) and rest of the units (kWh) are stored in the ATmega32 to ensure the accurate measurement even in the event of an electrical power outage that can be easily read from a 20×4 LCD. As soon as the supply is restored, energy meter restarts with the stored values. A single phase prepaid energy meter prototype has been implemented to provide measurement up to 40A load current and 230V line to neutral voltage.Necessary program for microcontrollers are written in c-language and compiled by Win-AVR libc compiler. These devices are the “brains” of the smart grid system. They create a virtual energy network – collecting data from “smart meters” installed at the end user locations as well as data from other digital equipment on the power lines, then send it over a wireless network back to Duke Energy and then back to the customer. The “smart meters” installed at the end user locations give the communication nodes, installed on the transformers, something to talk about. Valuable data about a home or business usage is in constant streaming mode to Duke Energy. This data allows Duke to lower or raise production during high or low usage times. Without the Smart Grid, Duke’s output is at best a guessing game, and in fact during the day, up to 30% of electricity produced by Duke can go…

Smart Grids are different from the existing infrastructure in the United States because it is much capable to distribute electricity more efficiently and of allowing communications between the various systems of the grid, and they also provide the consumer the detail of their usage and guide them how to reduce their consumption because they exist on modern technology, but the other old existing infrastructure is based on old technology, they have their old distribution plan line losses and able to know the usage of every consumer and the peak hours of usage like the grids that’s why the reason smart grids that's why the reason smart grids and better then old electricity infrastructure.…
