The energy flow in ecosystems is thus linear and in one direction. This is not a cyclic process. The energy flow can also be understood in the form of a food chain.
According to the first law of thermodynamics the energy can be transformed from one form to another form, but neither be created nor destroyed.

Second law: During the process of transformation of energy, a part is converted in unuseful form such as heat.

A living organism requires numerous elements to regulate their biological activities. Like energy even minerals cannot be destroyed. Plants obtain their minerals from the soil from where it is transferred to different organisms. on decomposition of plants and animals by decomposers they are again given to the atmosphere. This is again absorbed by plants. This is a cyclic process and is called the nutrient cycle.

SOIL:
The surface of the
ground is called the
soil. Soil is a mixture
of many minerals
and is formed due to
the degradation of
rocks.

CONSERVATION:
 Reduce
deforestation
 Prevent land
pollution
 Erosion of the top
soil should be
prevented

WATER:
75% of the earth is
made up of water.
But out of that only
1% is drinking water.
Water is required for
all metabolic
activities. No life will
exist without water.

CONSERVATION:

FOREST:
The terrestrial area
densely covered by
trees and shrubs is
called a forest. The
forest is required to
maintain an
ecological balance.

CONSERVATION:

 ponds must be
created
 Avoid water
pollution
 Rain-water
harvesting in all
houses

 Reduce
deforestation
 No selling of forest
products by
cutting down
trees.

MINERALS:
Minerals are the
building-block of
rocks. They are really
essential for mankind. They are found
in the core of the
Earth. They are the
non-renewable
resources.

CONSERVATION:
 More available
minerals should be
used
 Discarded objects
should be recycled
and reused.

ENERGY:
The conventional
sources of energy are:
fossil fuels( coal,
petroleum) and
radioactive substances
like uranium. The
nuclear fission of
uranium. All vehicles
depend on fuels for
their movement.

CONSERVATION:

 There are
substitutes
for these
nonrenewable
sources

Substitute energy for renewable resources
Solar energy: Indirectly
solar energy is used to
obtain biomass fuel. The
biomass fuel on burning
produces heat and can be
used instead of coal which
is a non-renewable
resource.

Hydro-electric energy:
It is produced from kinetic
energy of running water.
When water in dams are
left to flow they flow in
high velocity and turn the
turbines hence producing
electricity.

Wind energy: The
high velocity of the
wind is used to turn
wind mills and produce
energy. This can be
possible only in regions
of high winds.

Geo-thermal energy:
The hot springs
produced due to the hot
interior of the earth can
be tapped to produce
electricity. In Himachal
Pradesh electricity is
produced in this
method.
