Enduring Strength In Tracy Kidder's 'What Remains'
Enduring Strength Makes a Good Steward

by Adam Daniels

King College

The strength and endurance of the human spirit has never been better portrayed as it is in Tracy Kidder’s Strength in What Remains. Kidder’s telling of Deo’s story is an impressive one. Deo is a great example of a responsible steward. His stewardship is displayed in his fight for actual survival, his determination to become better educated, his love for his home and family, and his willingness to give back to a society that nearly killed him multiple times. Our circumstances are often not ours by choice, but how we respond to our circumstances is our choice. Deo did not choose to be born in Burundi nor did he choose to live in a place that would erupt in incredible violence. He did, however, choose to survive. He chose to run, hide in the forest, work for unfair wages, and chose to survive. It was also more than choice. It was a fight and it was not easy. “Moments were the only time he knew,” Kidder writes. “He spent nearly every moment worrying about the next. Six months felt like a minute, and moments when it felt like there was no time in front of him felt like an eternity.” (Kidder, 2009) Deo beheld horrific sights as he fled for his life. Dismembered bodies, an infant with a dead mother, and entire villages

Deo displayed his responsible stewardship by doing just this. Once he was befriended by Sharon and eventually Nancy and Charlie, Deo continued his education in the United States. He enrolled in the prestigious Columbia University and eventually obtained a graduate degree in public health and sciences. Education is the way to proactively care for our own society. It is the cure to many of society’s plagues. Crime, violence, genocide, and hatred can all be lessened or eradicated through education. Deo realized that the way he could make a difference was to become empowered. He did just that at Columbia

The Loyalty and Loss written by Margaret M. Storey is a well-written and persuasive book studying how the Unionists in Alabama, the Deep South state, confronted the Confederate authorities during the civil war and their life in the Reconstruction. The first interesting thing I found was that the diversity of the Unionists. The author tried to find the similarities among the different Unionists and surprisingly she found out that the Unionists were highly distributed. Some of them could from the infertile hill county and the others could from the rich Tennessee Valley. No matter how different their backgrounds were, all of them undertook great risks on defying the confederate authorities and fight for their belief.…

“Strength In What Remains” by Tracy Kidder, might seem a companion piece to his best-selling ”Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World” (2003). This story starts out as Farmer, whose foundation Partner’s in Health has reinvented health care delivery in some of the world’s poorest regions, figures briefly in this new book as a mentor to its central figure, Deogratias Niyizonkiza. Kidder in fact met Deo in Boston while researching Farmer’s history, though three years elapsed before he began investigating Deo’s own dramatic story. Deo escaped from the 1993-1994 ethnic genocides of Burundi and Rwanda. He reinvented himself as an American immigrant, and, inspired by Partner’s in Health, returned…

A Legacy of Perseverance The dawn of 1858 marked the beginning of continuing Chinese immigration from their native country to the expanses of British North America that would soon form the current Canada. The initial wave of Chinese settler to settle in Canada were inspired by various pull and push factors. Negative factors pushed the Chinese people away from their native homes while foreign forces pulled them towards another country. The push factors, like wars and floods in China, made it extremely difficult for people live peaceably, grow crops, or raise families.…

“How would you guys feel about moving?” Those words both excited and frightened me. They were not surprising to hear, as there had been hints that it might happen for a long time, but I was still shocked. Leaving my home of twelve years, where I had gone through school, made friends, and grown up, was not going to be easy. At the same time, however, it represented new opportunities that I didn’t have in the suburbs of Dallas. I imagine that this was what Deo and the Lost Boys of Sudan felt as they journeyed to their new lives in America, but on a much lesser scale. As difficult as it was to move to rural Northwest Iowa, I cannot imagine the difficulty of immigrating to the United States from the war-torn parts of Africa. At the same time, through reading and watching their stories, I was able to relate somewhat because of my own experiences. I have realized as a result that I should…

Choices shape our lives in many ways. It is impossible to go through life without making any. What we choose can define us, can close off a part of our life that, had we chosen differently, could have led to something completely different. Many things can influence our choices, from morals, to peers, to experience.…

As one journeys through his or her life, decisions will ultimately have to be made--whether simple or complex. This will carry a person from point A to point B and, if fortunate, achieving point C along the way. This is never as simple a process as it appears to be, because life itself is not simple. A decision has consequences, both good and bad, and will lead people down their life paths. These decisions often include: what people will eat or wear, what career they will end up in, if and when they will marry. This does not happen for all, as some are unfairly afflicted with disease or sickness, fall victim to freak accidents that cannot be controlled, and even where they are positioned on a global scale. One assurance that all of humanity has, regardless of belief, status, or gender, is the life cycle and the choices on can make. A person is born, lives, and dies; that is essentially, the life cycle. On the other hand, being restrained within this life cycle, humans can choose their paths and make their own decisions. In Godfather Death, by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, the decisions of a godson are explored as he journeys through his life, takes advantage of possible opportunities, and ultimately decides his own fate.…

Imagine having the power to change one’s destiny. In Yukio Mishima’s story, “Swaddling Clothes”, the main character, Toshiko, toys with this idea. Mishima himself controlled his own destiny by committing suicide – an event that “Yukio Mishima had planned for over a year.” Toshiko also plans to commit suicide in a sense by confronting an illegitimate child in twenty years to tell him of his unfortunate birth. She decides that by doing this, the child, who will undoubtedly be a vagrant by this time, will attack her, rather than perhaps one day harming her own son. She believes that by putting herself in danger, she will be changing her son’s destiny.…

    It's Choice Not Chance

Choice is defined as an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. Chance is defined as a possibility of something happening. To be able to choose something is a much broader concept in life then leaving something down to chance, having choices is something everyone takes for granted yet everyone seems to be constantly over analysing the possibilities of chance. A universal paradox states “you are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice”. These ideas are clearly explored in Shakespeare’s 1600 play Antony and Cleopatra, Gil Junger’s 1999 movie 10 things I hate about you and Tony Lintermans poem “The Escape from Youth” as their protagonists make irrational decisions and struggle to deal with the consequences of their choices.…
