I agree that empathy is an important skill for a crisis worker. For instance, traing police officers it will be helpful to develop “a compassionate-warrior mindset,” since it will “provide better services to those experiencing psychiatric distress, but the warrior mindset may also help officers survive other potentially dangerous situations” (p 318). In other words, teaching police officers that it is okay to show empathy, since is part of a warrior would not only help them, but also those who are suffering metal health problems. According to James and Gilliland (2012) empathy can be communicated by being attentive (e.g. keeping eye contact, smiling, etcetera), communicating it verbally, reflecting feelings, nonverbal communication (e.g.

Empathy helps build trust and increases patient compliance, as a result, patients have better recovery rates. According to a research study, doctors provide better service when their patients fully verbalize their emotional concerns (Killam, 2014). It is no secret that being a doctor is a stressful job; however, health providers and even patients can help physicians physically recharge through burnouts.     Core counselling skills include non-verbal communication (NVC) where facial expressions, body language and gestures can be key in understanding what the client or counsellor is thinking or feeling such as showing empathy, stress or confidence. Active Listening and Paraphrasing where the counsellor is required to demonstrate that they are making sense of what the client is talking about are acquired core skills. By paraphrasing, the counsellor is repeating what the client has said, but in their own words which helps the client feel understood and valued. To be able to paraphrase, the counsellor needs to be able to listen actively. Clarifying is another tool used by the trained counsellor as a way of checking that they have understood what their client has been talking about. Using silence is a skill that can be beneficial to the client under the appropriate circumstances. Questions being asked by the counsellor are described as 'open' and 'closed' and should be used with caution. Asking open questions can encourage the client to open up a bit more and talk a bit more about their issues but asking a closed question normally attracts a short 'yes' or 'no' answer.     I was able to learn that I do not like providing community based mental health service in my own vehicle. This program has taught me that there are many avenues where I can provide my service and still be able to help my population of choice.
