A CLUSTER OF TRAITS O ABILITITES RELATING T EMOTOINAL SIDE OF LIFE
Emotional intelligence (EI) is defined as a person’s self-awareness, self-confidence, self-control, commitment and integrity, and a person’s ability to communicate, influence, initiate change and accept change (Goleman, 1998). EQ is quite distinct from IQ and is considered more important than IQ to live a happy and productive life. People who do not have a strong emotional intelligence have a very hard time making relationships that last. If you have bad emotional intelligence you can lose your temper easily or become sad which may lead to eating disorders, violent crimes, depression and early pregnancy. Emotional intelligence are different then a lot of other intelligence. A lot of people know what being creative or being smart is, but a lot don’t fully understand what emotional intelligence is. If you don’t have any emotional intelligence you could hurt yourself or someone else. EQ plays a major factor in the everyday lives of people just by not being able to communicate with people will play a major role in where you end up in life.
I think I have a good EQ as I am good in all the five major components of EQ which were suggested by Goleman. The first part is knowing my own emotions, I am aware of my emotions. I know what I am felling and so I am capable of making choices like whom to date or marry, which car to buy, what to order in a restaurant. I can clearly show my feelings through facial expressions, body language and people who can’t do so are considered low in expressiveness. Secondly, I can manage my emotions. I can control my emotions most of the times but sometimes I get very angry and due to this I get into a fight with my friends and family. Thirdly, I can motivate myself. I can motive myself to work hard for my projects and assignments and also study hard for exams. Next most of the times I can know what other people are felling through their body motions and

    With the publication of Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence in 1995, the business world got an answer to a question that had been plaguing it for decades: “Why did some people of a high IQ struggle at managing teams while other leaders of lower IQ excel at it”? Goleman asserted that the traditional measurement of IQ (intelligence quotient) was not enough to determine a good leader. Schools and universities concentrated on developing the cognitive and analytical part of the brain, while the teaching of how the emotional side of the brain worked was ignored. Goleman defined this “emotional intelligence” of a human being as a set of competencies that distinguish how one manages feelings and interacts with others. These emotional intelligence competencies are divided into two categories: personal and social. Personal competencies are how we manage our self and our own feelings, and social competencies are how we manage our inter-personal relationships. There are three basic personal competencies: knowing one’s emotions, managing emotions, and motivating one’s self. The two basic social competencies are recognizing emotions in others and handling relationships. Mastering these competencies, in addition to having sufficient IQ intelligence, makes for a truly effective leader. Thankfully for all of us, Goleman asserts that emotional intelligence can be obtained by understanding what the five competencies are and then developing one’s skills in using them.…
