Emotional Engagement Research
In the Australian context, recent evidence shows a relationship between students’ engagement with school and the occupational status they achieve later in life (Abbott-Chapman et al. 2013). Students engage with school at emotional, behavioral and cognitive levels (Fredricks, Blumenfeld & Paris 2004). Emotional engagement refers to students’ affective reactions towards school, such as interest, boredom, happiness, sadness and anxiety. Behavioral engagement covers the extent to which students follow rules and adhere to classroom norms, participate in extracurricular activities, and exhibit 3 behaviors such as skipping school or ‘getting into trouble’.
