Eminem's "Mockingbird" Critique
A True Lullaby Marshall Bruce Mathers III, more known as Eminem and alter ego Slim Shady, has transformed the rap game significantly if not entirely. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 82nd on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The same magazine declared him The King of Hip Hop. Although he is known for his explicit and controversial hits such as "Kim" and "3a.m.", he does show his soft side occasionally in each album. Of all Eminem classics, "Mockingbird" is definitely an emotional masterpiece proving his legendary lyrical storytelling ability backed up by a clever beat that appeal to millions. The lyrics are a personal, undisguised account of his early relationship with his wife and daughters. The purpose is clear within the first 30 seconds of the song. "Hailie, I know you miss your mom, and I know you miss your dad. When I'm gone I'm tryin' to give you the life that I never had." Within the first few lines he directly states his daughter's name and is speaking as if she was reading a letter from himself. This gives the listener a position of relation to Eminem to understand his feelings towards his daughter. The Mathers family lived in a dangerous ghetto neighborhood on 8 Mile in Detroit. "All the things growing up as daddy that he had to see. Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did." The “things” he is referring to are witnessing her mother popping pills in the kitchen, getting robbed multiple times and experiencing several drive-by's. His long relationship with ex-wife Kim was also brought into the story, however it was to show that even though they are apart they still love her as if they were together. "I know mommy's not here right now and we don't know why. We feel how we feel inside. It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby. But I promise mama's gon' be alright." Hailie was 8 years old when this song was released, which is quite young for a girl who has witnessed such hardships. Eminem stated in his interview with

“I have a dream today… From every mountain side, let freedom ring.” These were the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. During the time period set in To Kill a Mockingbird and when MLK lived (1930-1960), racial discrimination and prosecution were sewn into the culture of the south of the United States. The Civil Rights Act through the 1950’S and 60’s was meant to reverse this thinking of hatred and prejudice towards African-Americans. This movement became “the nation’s latest attempt to perform in the South an exorcising of its original sin, and it turned out our most epic moral drama since the Civil War itself” (Marshall Frady, 2). One of the most prominent leaders in this act was Dr. King. This reverend became one of the main reasons segregation ended throughout America. During the March on Washington on August 28th 1963, he gave a speech entitled “I Have a Dream.” The importance of the “I Have a Dream” speech was that it brought greater national attention to the Civil Rights Movement, shined light upon MLK and his nonviolent philosophies, and influenced thousands to come together without racial division.…

As most people have read the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, many have wondered, what contributes most to the story’s themes? Well, throughout the novel, there are three main literary elements that come into play. In the passage “‘It ain’t right, Atticus…”’(pg.284) to “I looked up, and his face was vehement”(pg.296), Harper Lee uses the literary element character, setting, and tone to develop the theme that recognizing perspectives contributes to coming of age. As many other themes in the novel, the theme will show a change in how Jem starts to view the world, and the major roles included in it, such as racism. His rap songs are over flowing with rhythm and rhyme. Eminem has the talent to make just about any word rhyme. He could make something rhyme with orange if he had to. Without his strong rhythm skills, his music would be nothing. Without his strong rhythm skills, he would have no rhymes. Without his strong rhythm skills, Eminem would not be the rapper and artist he is today. Marshall Mathers is able to scrounge up any group of words, make them rhyme and sound absolutely amazing with the help of his right brained rhythm knack. It is astonishing to look at his ability to rhyme so well, and make fantastic pieces of art. Eminem is not some ordinary rapper, rhyming words like time, dime, and slime; He is rhyming more complex words, and words you would not even imagine could go…

The chapter opens with the introduction of the narrator, Scout (Jean Louise) Finch, her older brother Jem (Jeremy), and their friend and neighbor, Dill (Charles Baker Harris). Next, Lee provides an overview of Finch family history. Their ancestor, a Methodist named Simon Finch, fled British persecution and eventually settled in Alabama, where he trapped animals for fur and practiced medicine. Having bought several slaves, he established a largely self-sufficient homestead and farm, Finch's Landing, near Saint Stephens. The family lost its wealth in the Civil War. Scout's father, Atticus Finch, studied law in Montgomery while supporting his brother, John "Jack" Hale Finch, who was in medical school in Boston. Their sister Alexandra remained at Finch's Landing. Atticus began his law practice in Maycomb, the county seat of Maycomb County, where his "office in the courthouse contained little more than a hat rack, a spittoon, a checkerboard, and an unsullied Code of Alabama." His first case entailed defending two men who refused to plead guilty for second-degree murder. They instead pled not guilty for first-degree murder, and were hanged, marking "probably the beginning of my father's profound distaste for criminal law." Scout then describes Depression-era Maycomb, "an old tired town when I first knew it", summer heat and slow pace of life. She notes, "There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County". Scout describes as her father as entirely "satisfactory," and her family's black cook, Calpurnia, as strict and "tyrannical." Scout and Jem's mother died of a heart attack when Scout was two and she has no memories of her. However, Jem can remember his mother and Scout notices that he is occasionally nostalgic about her. The novel takes begins during the summer. Scout is almost six, and Jem is almost ten. Once this background picture is complete, the real…

It’s a sin to kill mockingbirds. That’s what Atticus told Jem when he acquired his first weapon. He told him it’s a sin to harm anything that doesn’t commit any wrong, a message the American South needed to hear desperately at the time Harper Lee was writing. In the book, the children have been relentlessly making fun of Boo Radley, but Jem soon realizes that Boo is not what their prejudices had caused them to make him out to be. He learns from this, and begins questioning his beliefs. Lee uses Jem’s experiences with prejudice to introduce the message into the story, which is a message that is also meant to influence the racist American south.…

There are many characters that symbolize being a mockingbird in the novel. These characters portray different roles and perspectives of mockingbirds that all blend together by the end. Subsequently, Tom Robinson is an apparent choice for this role because he is constantly subjected to oppression by white characters in the book. He is falsely accused of rape by Mayella Ewell whom hints at being actually raped by her dad. The date was March 25, 1931. Nine African American teenagers boarded a train with several white boys and two white women. The white boys jumped off and had the black boys arrested for false claims of having been attacked. Additionally, they were accused of rape by the two women, known to be prostitutes, in the hopes of covering up their own crimes. A series of trials initiated, now known as the Scottsboro Boys trials, where eight of the nine innocent boys were found guilty and sentenced to death. At the time of the Great Depression, countless cases such as this occurred in the South. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that the innocent are especially vulnerable to the injustices of our society by showing that segregation intensified the struggles of African Americans in the South.…
