Emergency Room Summary
On Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at approximately 4:34PM, I, Officer Larry Thomas was informed by Officer Utsey over the radio, that he was called to the peep area, room 31, here in the emergency room at UAMS hospital, in reference to a patient refusing to take medication.
Upon arrival, I observed Officer Utsey, Officer Friday and the medical doctor Tyler Griffin standing in the hallway talking with this patient. I later discovered that this patient name was Donald Best Jr. While Mr. Best was talking to (MD) Mr. Griffin, he started making statements that his girlfriend was outside the door and he wanted to talk to her. Griffin was talking to Mr. Best trying to get him to cooperate and asking him to take his medication and Mr. Best stated “No”. Mr. Best was drinking water and stopped. Mr. Best removed his tee-shirt that he was wearing started walking around saying do what you got to do. At this time, Dr. Griffin advised medical staff and officers that he wants soft restraint placed on this subject. Dr. Griffin tried to assist Mr. Best by walking out with him and this subject became aggressive saying “No”. This subject started trying to aggressively tussle with Dr. Griffin. Myself along with Officer Friday and Officer Utsey assisted Dr. Griffin and medical staff with placing this subject in soft restraints.
I assisted medical staff and officers with Mr. Best and sustained a small laceration to the left cheek area on my face. This subject was placed in soft restraints safely. Officers and medical staff were able to gain control. This subject was trying to get out of the restraints but was unsuccessful. This patient appeared to be under the influence of something. I checked on all medical staff and officers. RN Cutis Elect advised me that he may have a pulled hamstring and groin injury. Dr. Griffin and other medical staff advised that they were fine.
After this patient control, I checked into the ER to be checked out by medical staff. I was cut by this patient finger nail. I contacted Workers Compensation Telephonic Injury Hotline and reported the incident. My report number for the hotline
