One rarely tethers the invention of branding and marketing to Rock and roll, but in the 1950’s they were a package deal. This is especially true for Elvis Presley, who was branded, rebranded, and sold across the scope of available entertainment to include music, film, published materials, and consumer ads. His face was literally everywhere, not only reinforcing his stardom, generating a solid fanbase, but becoming a lucrative investment. Consider one ad published in 1956 by a teen-ager lipstick corporation selling Elvis Presley Lipstick. Their slogan: “Keep me forever on your lips.” It might appear strange that Elvis Presley, the alleged King of Rock and roll would endorse lipstick to teenage girls.
