Ellis Island Vacation
During my vacation I visited a place that has played an exceptional role in shaping the history and culture of America: Ellis Island. You may be wondering what is Ellis Island? Well, Ellis Island was the center of US immigration in the late 1800s and the early 1900s.Where immigrants from all over came to start a new life in the United States of America.
Ellis Island is located in the Port of New York and New Jersey. I remember learning about Ellis Island in 3rd grade and actually going there made me understand a lot more, on a more personal level. I saw the building and was amazed and thought …Wow! Twelve million people would pass through this island and begin a new journey.
Everything began right when you walked in. Officers would be waiting

This was a very large hall and was nicknamed the Great Hall because many of the immigrants had never seen this large of a room before. The waiting room was filled with wooden benches where the immigrants can wait for their turn. Then one by one for two minutes each, people would go up and get examined .The examination included a short checkup. They were checked for different diseases, one of which was checked with a hook to lift the person’s eyelid; this part of the examination was feared by many. The other part was a set of twenty-nine questions. Some of which were: What is your name? What is your final destination in America? Where were you born? Can you name the 13 original colonies? In the end, they would decide if you were set to go out into the country or stay for a further investigation. Only about 2 percent of the immigrants were sent back to their country.
At the other end of the Great Hall was another staircase with three aisles one for the immigrants getting detained one for the people traveling south or west and one for those going to New York or north. And at the bottom of the staircase was where you could get your money exchanged.
Ultimately at this point there long journey had ended and they were finally in America ready to live a new life!
IN the end I would like to wish Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin a long and prosperous life till the day of qiyamaat.
