Ellen Moore in Korea
1. Conflicts Analysis

The troubled situation of JVC can be attributed to the major conflict between Ellen and Jack, causing another aggravating conflict occurred consequently.

a. The major conflict was between Ellen Moore and Jack Kim, with the following symptoms:

- They had controversial issues "during the first few weeks because they were clearly stepping upon each other's territory". Ellen understood that she was the co-project manager with Jack, but Jack believed that he was the sole project manager for SI. In fact, the Korean team members always followed Jack's instructions which are different from Ellen's. Even, Jack got angry when, upon coming back from business trip, he saw that the team members just followed Ellen's instructions. Here, they were in conflict over who was giving instructions to the team members (perceived mutually exclusive goals).
- Jack wanted to carry out a market research study, which, in Ellen's opinion, was out of the project's scope and could delay the progress of SI. Here, they were in conflict over what was the scope of the project (perceived mutually exclusive events).
- The conflict between Ellen and Jack is a dysfunctional conflict as it was harming the company business (a month behind the schedule).
- The conflict increased to the level that Ellen had no way but made Jack lose face by interrupting and disagreeing with him in public. After that, Jack behaved very unprofessionally in the dinner by creating a hostile environment towards Ellen.
- The conflict between Ellen and Jack was caused by the following sources:
• Perceived adverse changes: Jack was told on daily basis that he was the sole project manager, while Ellen came with the idea of co-project manager. When they met each other, they realized their conditions of work changed negatively for each side. Therefore, they blamed each other for causing the change in working conditions.
• Personality clash: Jack and Ellen have different clashing cultural values.

Ellen, who is a flat character, is a depressed, negative individual at the beginning, and remains that way until the conclusion. This is indirectly illustrated at the end when she should have felt proud of stopping Mr. Lercher, but instead "It didn't matter. Nothing mattered. There would be forms to fill out, a delay in Chicago, an uneventful flight into New York, eight hours behind schedule" (209). She is also a static character because she remains emotional and drunk throughout the story, even though it seems she is changing at times. Ellen is repeatedly drinking her problems away throughout the story, and at the end "[she] sat, dazed, over yet another Scotch…" (209) By using the words "yet another," the author implies that everything is the same. The constant negative attitude and drinking both aid in repressing her feelings, which might cause them to grow into an unexpected outburst of…

There was constructive conflict in the scenario. Constructive conflict occurs when the group or team expresses disagreements in ways that value everyone’s contributions and promote the group’s goals. (Engleberg, Wynn, 2012) The key factor is when the team did not agree with Betty’s idea of a bake sale. After not agreeing with the bake sale, the team discussed why the bake sale was not a good idea, then discussed another option for the funding. One conflict style that I saw was collaboration, and compromise.…

Many transformations changed Jack's behavior. He becomes obsesses with hunting, and killing pigs. He takes great pride in the fact that he killed a pig. "'I cut the pigs throat,' said Jack, proudly ... 'there were lashings of blood,' Said Jack, laughing and shuddering 'You should have seen it!" Jack also becomes less civilized when he becomes violent and hits Piggy for no justifiable reason. "He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy's stomach ... Jack smacked Piggy's head. Piggy's glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks." He also acts uncivilized when he shows disrespect to the person who is holding the conch. He constantly talks out of turn. Jack becomes less civilized because of his aggressive and violent behavior. Jack's painted face also symbolizes a breakdown in social and moral behavior. He becomes primitive in his social and moral behavior which affects everyone's behavior in a negative way. This is shown when everyone ranted, "Kill the pig, cut her throat, and spill her blood." Everyone was acting in a uncivilized way because of Jack's conduct.…
