Race and mass incarceration. It is a harsh topic for many, but Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th provides all of the background information needed for that conversation. On the other hand, the Selma director’s film manages to capture the depth and insidiousness of more than a century of cultural, societal and economic oppression along racial lines and then condenses it into a brisk 100-minute movie. This brilliantly written script has many innuendos of these scholarly ladies acting a bit like men in order to make the point that women can and should have equal rights. The plot thickens when Ben Weissman (Patrick Dempsey) tries to seduce the beautiful Alice Paul. Weissman shows Paul how to feel sexy, and that it’s okay to feel like a woman. Von Garnier has incredible insight on how to make a woman feel beautiful when she flashes pictures of Paul taking a bath, shots of her lips, and her smiling.…

Alec Waugh, a British novelist once said, “you can fall in love at first sight with a place as with a person”. A place can have so much character to not only make a person fall in love at first sight, but to keep that person entranced by love for the place. The city one might picture is Paris the city of love or the islands of Hawaii. However, this city is not the typical city that comes to mind. It is the city with busy streets and beautiful people, Los Angeles. The beaches of Los Angeles can be breathtaking, but it is the personality of Los Angeles that keeps a person around. A story based on a life of a Los Angeles native portrays the city as a land of opportunity.…
