Elizabeth Bowen The Demon's Lover
The story "The Demon's Lover” written by Elizabeth Bowen is a story were you can see ambiguity at its finest. In this case there are two ways to interpret the story, there is the psychological and the spiritual way of interpreting the plot of the story. The setting is in the city of London during the London Blitz meaning that it was during World War II. In my opinion I think that Mrs. Drover is suffering from a psychological disorder or trauma caused by the war.

Mrs. Drover is the main character of the story. Apparently she flees from London and moved to the countryside but in the story she is coming back to get some personal things for her family that were left behind, so she is back in London. There are many reasons why we can say that

The effect of the hardships of the environment on the drover’s wife is clearly seen through Lawson’s description of her physical appearance, “The gaunt sun-browned bush women”. This is further reinforced by the brutal and comfronting imagery used to portray her children as having a “ragged, dried up look”. Powerful imagery of the physical toll on this “once young city woman” is effective in establishing a strong impression of the woman battling against isolation in the bush.…

"The Devil in the Shape of a Woman," written by Carol Knudson, is about the accusations of witches in New England during the 17th century. Knudson focused the book on the reasons why women were accused of being witches, and how they were punished. The government in New England seemed to point the finger at women who fit into two categories. "Most witches in New England were middle-aged or older women eligible for inheritances" (p. 117). The categories that Knudson focused most on were gender and age.…

In ‘The drover’s wife’ Lawson creates powerful images by employing distinctively visual language that enables the responder to feel the hardships that others face. Concrete sensory description is effectively used to create a beautiful image when The Drover’s wife sits to watch the snake all night. ‘A green sapling club laid in readiness on the dresser by her side, together with her sewing basket and copy of the young ladies journal.’ The journal is symbolic of the approach she takes in not letting the bush take away her femininity. Juxtaposing to this, the club is symbolic of what she needs to do, it displays her innovative ways and her ability to be content with her lifestyle. The sewing basket acts as a ‘bridge’ between the two as it represents both sides of the woman. Images of a resourceful, cooperative and woman of sophistication are conjured up in the responders mind. One is able establish a relationship of commendation with the drover’s wife whilst despising the Australian Bush for what it puts her through.…

In the short story “The Demon Lover,” written by Elizabeth Bowen, she describes a story of a middle aged woman who had made a promise with her fiancé twenty-five years ago. It begins by Mrs. Kathleen Drover coming back to her old bombed house in London to pick up a few things left behind. While she was there, Mrs. Drover finds a letter which makes her recall of her soldier fiancé twenty-five years ago and the promise that he made her make. After she had read the letter she goes to get a taxi and screams when she sees the driver’s face. Bowen implies two possible hypotheses in this short story: one being that Mrs. Drover is mentally unstable and she is hallucinating things and events, or that there is something…

In the 1600’s, the idea of having sex with demons was intriguing because it corresponded with knowledge of the supernatural world. The concept of having sex with demons was also highly interesting because if there was a fear of demons that meant there was angels and Gods. In the context of demonic sex with the 20th century, it could correspond with sadomasochism. Though in the 1600’s people stated they had no choice in the matter when having sex with demons, within sadomasochism the main statement tied with it is that it must be safe, sane and consensual. The dramatic changes in even just the positions of sex since the 1600’s shows the change of view about sex as a whole. Within the 1600’s the idea of sex with demons terrified people, causing…

Text 1 ‘The Ballad of the Drover’ is a poem written by Henry Lawson in the 1930s. It was sourced from poetry.org on 21/7/12. This poem is in the tradition of the Australian ‘Bush Ballad’ and narrates the story of Harry Dale, a young drover who is on his way home when confronted by a flood. Like many poems from this period it glorifies the lifestyle of popular Australian characters like the drover. This poem discusses the concept of the physical obstacles that affect journeys. It also reveals the idea that a physical journey causes people to reflect on their relationships with others.…

The Devil in the Shape of a Woman by Carol Karlsen (1987) astutely focuses attention upon the female as witch in colonial New England, thus allowing a discussion of broader themes regarding the role and position of women in Puritan society. Karlsen's work, which has been well-received, focuses on the position of accused witches as largely females placed in precarious social and economic positions, often because they stood to inherit, had inherited, or lost an inheritance in property. Karlsen departs from the idea that women accused of witchcraft were boisterous beggars, a depiction "tantamount to blaming the victim" (Nissenbaum) and instead points to these "inheriting women" as being socially vulnerable in a patriarchal culture.…

The Drovers wife shows the harsh landscape of the australian outback through the tough times the drovers wife has to endure by herself to survive. The perception of her is that she is a protective mother and a persistent battler against the diasters of the australian outback. The use of alliteration “no undergrowth, nothing to relieve the eye…nineteen miles to the nearest…civilisation” shows the drovers wife as being desolated and isolated from society.…

Drovers character in the story. She had involved herself into a naïve relationship with a man she had barely even known. This man was a soldier and would propose to her right before he would be sent off in to the fighting and would later be declared “missing.” This was by no means un common for the time period, as many soldiers and their romances would promise to wait for them until after the war. However, she had never even seen the man’s full face giving her a sense of foolishness. The foolishness would escalate as they were engaged to the man she didn’t even know just shortly after becoming acquaintances. She had not only been naïve by accepting the engagement, but by showing fake love to him when she goes away to her mother saying “What shall I do? What shall I do? He has gone(Bowen2).” The letter had not only given a plot to the story but had shown that Mrs. Drover really never had feelings for the…

I am interested in the drover’s wife among all characters in this story according to two reasons. One of the reasons is I think she is incredibly independent person; although her husband lives far away from her, she still can live by herself and take care of four children independently. She can deal with heart broken, sorrow, loneliness, and she even can encourage herself to kill the snake. Last, she’s sacrificial mother. As a mother, she sacrificed a lot. She didn’t sleep for a whole night in order to protect her children from the snake. Moreover, she even rode nineteen mile, carrying her death child, in order to find some help. These points show that there isn’t many mother can do this.…
