Elie Wiesel's Faith In The Book Night
Giving up on God
Faith is defined as complete trust in someone or something, having complete and total trust in someone that they will catch you when you fall or when you make a mistake is a very hard thing to do, yet thousands even millions of people have faith in God and worship him everyday. Elie Wiesel was a very strong believer himself. He prayed everyday and wanted to further study him religion and master it. Only after he was sent to the concentration camps to witness and experience all of these inhumane and terrible things that were happening did he question if God was really there. I believe this is to show how much he believed and how much of a loss it was when his faith started to leave him. I believe all of this talk about Elie’s strong faith in the beginning of the book is using the literary device, foreshadowing to prepare for the drastic change in his feeling toward God. Elie Wiesel believed in god so strongly when he was growing up that he spent almost all of his time trying to learn more about it, “One day I asked my father to find me a master who could guide me in my studies of Kabbalah” (page 4). He also spent a great deal of time praying and worshipping God. “By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the Synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple” (page 3). In order to show the great loss of faith Elie uses great word choice and unique and detailed phrases to illustrate the situation in the reader’s mind. An example of this intricate twisting of words is, “ Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes” (page 34). These sentences and descriptive words help describe the theme of loss of faith and also helps set the scene in the audience’s imagination, helping to push the emotions to new heights. Elie’s story was so important and so interesting that this story had to be conveyed with careful detail and meticulous placing of words so that the theme and attitude of the story was not misread. Another example of this great work that shows loss of faith is, “ His cold eyes stared at me. At last, he said wearily: ‘ I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people”(page 81).
In conclusion this book has many, many different literary devices and examples of them that show and represent the theme, loss of faith. The most widely used devices in this book are foreshadowing, tone, and syntax. Elie used all of these to explain his feelings toward God and toward people in general.
