Elie
One of the most tragic themes in night is Elie’s discovery of the way that atrocities and cruel treatment can make good people into brutes. This is apparent all throughout the book. There were numerous examples were once civil men killed each other over a small crumb of bread. Or were friends would betray each other at the hope that they would survive another day or get more rations. When a person is faced with death, they will do anything in their power to survive. Even if this means betraying there fellow man and becoming a beast. It is pure instinct to want to live and nothing is more power full then the will to survive. Unfortunately I do not believe Elie that evaded the fate of becoming a brute.
In the beginning of the book it is evident that Elie is already thinking more of his self and his own survival. Although it is suttle the evidence Is there. For example, when Elie’s father asked the gypsy, “where the latrines were located”(pg. 39) and he was struck. Elie realized, “only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminals flesh” (pg. 39). Even though Elie himself had only been in camp for a day he is already turning into a brute. This is the first example of Elie changing. Although there are not many other events that are similar to this until the end of the book, during that time Elie receives beatings and he witnesses horrible atrocities that would harden any human being. Which contributes to the events that occur during the few final chapters.

During the few final chapters is where Elie shows his changed personality. When in the final camp, Elie is looking for his father and thinks, “only if I didn’t find him” “what a relief it would be” pg.(106). Even though Elie felt ashamed of his thoughts, this is the second event that showed him becoming a brute. Elie knew that keeping his farther alive was a hindrance to him, and it would be easier to survive without him. As Elie’s father grows weaker, he is unable to move. One day an ss officer

p- 34-35: These 2 pages discuss the change in Elie. Elie has only been in a camp for only one night and he changed already. He says, the child that I was, had been consumed by flames. There remained only a shape that looked like me. This is a very important part of the book. It is the first large change in Elie. Its the change of boy of the bible to an empty body whose only purpose was to try to survive. This change occurred from his first night at the camp. As soon as he stepped off the train and was separated for his mother and sister; he didnt know for how long, or what was going to happen to them. The other traumatic event that could have caused his change was him seeing people being forced into the furnace. These to things at first probably just sent him into shock; these are things that dont happen in a normal life. The change probably occurred when he started to understand what was going on, even though he still didnt have a good idea of what was going on. Elie and…

On many occasions in Night, the Jews' individual human survival instincts dominate their compassion for others and love for family members. After many months of exhausting work and living in terrible conditions, Elie's father's health decreases rapidly, and Elie spends the night in Buchenwald on the bunk above him. When he wakes up, his father had been taken away and replaced by another sick prisoner. Elie's reaction is surprisingly insensitive. "I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!" (112). Within him, Elie's desire to survive and endure this test of strength supersedes his devotion to his father. Human survival instinct takes over and he gives in to his concerns for himself. With this changed perspective focused on self-preservation, he no longer wants to provide adequate care for his father, and it matters much less to Elie if his father survives. He is seen as a burden instead of an important figure in Elie's life, and so Elie is relieved when he finds his father has been taken away for a certain death. The challenges of life in Buchenwald force the Jews to transform their way of thinking and behaving to give themselves the best chance of…

What keeps Elie going throughout the book is his strong sense of hope. One of the messages of hope that stands out the most in Night doesn’t come from Elie, but a young Pole in charge of Elie and his father’s new block at Auschwitz. They are shaved, tattoos, examined, and many more processes that makes them feel hopeless. After they are processed they are sent to their new home. When you and your family are all forced into a death camp, separated, and treated as subhuman, you tend to protect the only ones you love enough to risk your life for. In the camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, one teenager and his father find themselves in exactly that dilemma, starving and with only each other to rely on. Elie Wiesel, a child thrown into these camps with his father, miraculously survived and went on to write about his experiences and struggles, most notably in his memoir Night. This book shows what really happened behind the scenes of Nazi Germany during World War 2, things that would not be revealed for years to come. And more specifically, it shows how Elie's relationships to his father and to the…

Elie turns from innocent to haunted throughout the story by coming from a good community and being put into a hostile environment. At first before he got deported from his home, Sighet in Transylvania. He was an innocent young boy who studied the Talmud “Hilda and Bea helped them with the work. As for me, they said my place was in school” (2). Since he was able to be sent to school by his family and have the chance to learn that shows that he was from a well off family. But once he entered the concentration camp, unaware of the terrors he was going to face, changed his life completely “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed (32)”. The life changing experiences that Elie went through in the concentration camps scarred him for life. The burning of the little children and their mothers affected him in such a way that it would stay with him for the rest of his life.…
