Eli Whitney Eli Whitney was known as one of great inventor; Whitney was born in the town Westborough in Worcester County, on December 8, 1765, the eldest child of Eli Whitney Sr., a prosperous farmer, and his wife Elizabeth Fay of the same place, so he decided to get into doing machine work and technology. For instance, during the Revolutionary War, he became an expert at making nails from a device of his own invention, and later he crafted canes. Whitney was an American inventor who was best known for the cotton gin, interchangeable parts and milling machine. The cotton gin is a mechanical device. A cotton gin is a machine that separates the seeds from the cotton fiber. It was important because before Eli Whitney invented anything, cleaning was done by hand and was labor intensive. For instance, the cotton gin was invented so the farmers wouldn’t have to prick their fingers getting the cotton gin. Later, the cotton gin changed all this. This allowed cotton production to explode across the South in the 19th century. Whitney’s gin made cotton production far more efficient. Interchangeability parts were invented to repair broken things. For example, if something broke, you can buy interchangeable parts and replace the broken piece. Interchangeable parts were achieved by combining a number of innovations and improvements in a machining operation. Such as, slide rest lathe, screw-cutting lathe, milling machine and metal planer. After this was invented, everything for those who need something became easier. Things became easier for everyone and engineers, the most because they use tools and many interchangeable parts. Milling machine is a process of using rotary cutters to remove material. For instance, milling machine is just like drills, expect it’s designed to handle extreme pressures and forces to side as well.

Before this invention, cotton was a declining cash crop because it was not as profitable as other cash crops. However, it was vital to the industry of the United States, so the southern economy suffered. After this machine was invented, cotton became very profitable and the southern economy boomed. Prior to this invention, factory workers could only process about a pound of cotton per day. After the invention, the factory workers could process fifty pounds of cotton in a single day. In 1791, cotton production in the United States was about two-million pounds per year. In 1860, that number was up to one billion. That is a dramatic increase, all due to Whitney’s cotton gin. Since farmers could produce so much cotton, this paved the way for the south’s cotton trade, which also had a major impact on the…

The first invention by Eli Whitney while in Georgia in 1793 is a simple machine that separates cotton fibers from the seeds. The modern mechanical cotton gin was invented in the United States in 1793. The gin has wire teeth mounted on a boxed rotating cylinder that, pulls cotton fiber through small grates to separate the seeds, while a rotating brush removes lint from the spikes to avoid jams. Eli applied for the invention on October 28, 1793; the invention was granted on March 14, 1794, but was not validated until 1807.…

Due to the simplicity of his cotton gin, Whitney’s design was easily imitated. Whitney had tried to patent his product but he failed and lost all his money in legal fees. Being almost bankrupt Whitney accepted a weapons contract from the United States War Department in 1798. There had been a war scare with France and the U.S. realized the need for weapons and started contracting. Eli Whitney was to make 10,000 to 15,000 muskets by 1800. He had never made a musket in his life. Whitney learned the trade and began manufacturing. Whitney was supposed to deliver the arms in one year but it took him eight years. Eli used countless excuses and charades to buy more time with the government. Whitney used the idea of interchangeable parts with his muskets. He amazed the government with his interchangeable parts idea. He did not create the idea although he is often credited with it. Whitney did play an important role in popularizing mass production and interchangeable parts. This system of interchangeable parts played a big role in Northern States. The North was comprised of factories and manufacturing companies. Interchangeable parts made these factories more efficient and productive. This significantly helped boost the economy of Northern States for years to come and has impacted how we manufacture things to this…

As the South lacked the ability to process raw cotton, they were faced with a nearly insurmountable obstacle. They produced too little cotton to be able to cover the costs of shipping it to a processing plant, most likely in the North or England, their primary consumers. Yielding little return on the high-maintenance King (Queen?) of the South, her cotton production spiraled into decline in the years leading up to the 1800's. However, ironically, a Yankee named Eli Whitney helped the South's dependency on slavery to bloom like many never though possible with his invention of the cotton gin in 1793. His machine automated the seed…

He is an American inventor best known for his invention of the Gatling gun. His father worked on machines to sow cotton and thin out cotton plants on the plantation (britannica.com). He worked with his father to perfect the machines on the farm at an early age. At age 15 he started to work at the county clerk’s office, and by the time he turned 19 he left the county clerk’s office to teach school and become a merchant (YourDictionary.com). At the age of 21 he perfected a practical screw propeller for steamboats, only to find that a patent had been granted to John Ericsson for a similar invention a few months earlier (britannica.com). At the age of 22 he was able to successfully patent a rice planter, which was the beginning of his notoriety. He later moved to St Louis, Missouri at the age of 26, where he worked in a dry goods store and manufactured seed planters (britannica.com). He adapted the current cotton sowing machine and made it work to sow rice, wheat, and other grains. The adoption of these machines revolutionized the agricultural system in the country (britannica.com).…

When the term “Market Revolution” is heard, the first thing many people associate it with is Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin. Whitney’s invention was the first major innovation, revolutionizing both northern manufacturing and southern agriculture. Since the job was previously done by hand, the cotton gin produced a higher supply of cotton at a faster rate. Cotton grew from 750,000 bales per year in 1830 to 2.5 million bales per year in 1850. America became a major supplier of cotton for the British and provided two-thirds of the world’s cotton supply. The cotton gin was among the most beneficial innovations in the antebellum era. Whitney also invented interchangeable parts in 1797 that provided easier compatibility of different parts of muskets. Many manufacturers soon began using his invention for their own benefits. Because of the large success of his innovations, Eli Whitney was a very important figure of the Market Revolution.…
