Elementary School Stage Performance
Personal narrative

22 October 2013 Stage fright

It was back in elementary school in Vietnam when I first realized that I enjoyed performing in front of an audience. Everyone gathered outside at the school's field to honor the teacher. I walked out with my quartet singing group to perform a children song relating to respecting teachers. Being an elementary student and performing within a group made it comfortable for me to perform confidently in front of the whole school. However, In the beginning of spring when I was in 6th grade, I made an entrance toward the band room. This was my first solo experience. That day I realized I had stage fright, and that it was something I had to overcome and gain confidence with.

My first time auditioning in front of judges and other contestants was nerve wrecking. I noticed everyone was staring at me. My eyes were focused on the judges wondering if i'll be able to impress them through my 1 minute audition. Suddenly, my heart was beating rapidly, speeding up so fast as if it was about to burst. My face started to heat up, my stage fright was exposed by the bright redness of my cheeks as I started to sing. When it was over, I walked off with disappointment of my audition.

A Few weeks after the audition, I learned that I got the part for the cultural talent show. On that day, the entire cast gathered for practice. With my stage fright still present, I step up to perform. At the end of my performance, everyone was cheering for me which helped me regain my confidence. It also helped me feel prepared and excited for the final performance.

My big night was on April 25th 2011; it was that day which made a big impact on me. I took a quick peek at my watch, seeing 7:00 pm on the hands, I panicked and realized that my performance will start in 10 minutes! Before I knew it, the MC called my name saying, " the next performer (insert name) ,

Once the time came to decide on who would conduct the finale, the choice was clear. The director saw my potential and inclination to achieve greatness during our rehearsals and chose me over many other talented individuals. Over the course of the next two months, I alone spearheaded every rehearsal, often spending hours a day in the band room providing both artistic and technical instruction to an ensemble of roughly 140 members. It was not until then that I had realized how difficult it was to convey artistic choices to such a large group of students effectively, but I eventually overcame the many obstacles that my lack of experience presented and skillfully conducted the finale at our concert. The piece received a standing ovation from the audience, but more importantly, a profound emotional response from many members of the audience that manifested as both tears and elated shouts. My director commented that it was the most efficient and successful finale piece he had ever seen. Similarly, I recently placed first in a district-wide audition between all the high school tenor saxophonists across multiple cities for entrance into a symphonic band. Unlike almost all musicians of my caliber, I have not had to rely on private lessons from professional…

I thought I would immediately rush the stage and began belting out the tunes of the song, amazing the audience with my brilliant monologue. Reality quickly set in. It seems I was rather naïve to think this way because before I could do perform, there was much work to be done. For starters, I had to rehearse and practice my lines over and over until I memorized them. This was not easy since I had to absorb the essence of the message behind every line of my monologue. “Was I expressing the correct emotions? Was I angry or was I expressing a joyous emotion?” There were doubts that crossed my mind. Before I could sing “Heart,” I had to participate in vocal warm-ups making sure to carry out every note clearly, making sure to carefully…

I wasn’t the greatest singer in the world, but I still had confidence; confidence in that I can do better and learn. Ms. Janke helped build that confidence by being my own personal voice teacher twice a week after school and I saw much improvement. I would have never considered singing, especially to a crowd of people, but this all changed when I met Kate. She was my choral instructor for three years while attending school. I saw much improvement in my voice range and tone. I improved so much that I got up the courage and sang the national anthem at one of our high school’s football games. When it was all said and done, people were looking at me and applauding. Ms. Janke once told me that I can do anything if I just worked hard. Because of my National Anthem performance, she was right. To this day I sing for people, and when I help people in their musical struggles I pass down her message to work hard, have confidence, and to not give…

As I was beginning a small career in the entertainment business, my mother was my source of encouragement. She inspired me to continue in the entertainment business because she knew that this was an opportunity of a life time. By the time I was eleven, I began using my voice in Spanish-language version of American films. Acting was becoming clear to me that it was my new calling and I cherished it more than singing and dancing. Then I received my first Broadway role at age thirteen where I was passing eleven and looking as if I was nine. I always looked young for my age. The Broadway drama I stared in was called Skydrift. Shortly after my appearance in the Broadway show, I was contacted by Hollywood talent scouts. The scout informed me that when the time was right he would notify me.…

I could hear the bustle of people out in the crowd as I was getting ready for the dance recital. As I started to get ready for the first dance, someone came in and told us we were going to be starting in a few minutes. We all went and lined up at the foot of the stage because we were one of the first people to go on. “Your next,” I heard from the people helping back stage. Right then I had to run through all of the steps to the dance in my head to make sure that I had everything right. I had worked on the dances for the last 9 months. It was our turn to go on stage.…

OPRF high school is brimming with diverse cliques, groups, and clubs. But one particular cohort seems to stand out from the rest. The theatre department, overseen by Michelle Bayer, can be described as a whirlwind of activity, with 10 official productions each year. My group researched it for the education unit, but the majority of them were unfamiliar with the activity, and I felt the overall presentation was unrepresentative of what high school theatre is. It can be characterized, primarily, by an abundance of drama, both in the acting sense, and in the social sense. Theatre kids are infamous for their diva-like attitudes, and occasional entitlement. I had the opportunity to observe these behaviors up close and personal with my shows I participated in this year.…

Upon joining my sorority earlier this semester I never would have thought I would be dancing and making a fool out of myself in front of hundreds of people on Green Street. Here I was though on November 1st, after practicing for at most three days with the other girls and Hockey team, ready to get on stage. My grand big is a dance major so she convinced me to join the Spurs and Struts team because they did not have enough people and I have a hard time saying no. This performance ended up being one of the scariest, but most fun experiences I have ever had. During Spurs and Struts I had lost my dance partner last minute so I had to dance a part alone. Also, I could not grab my rally towel that was tucked in my leggings so that was embarrassing…

From singing Phantom of the Opera in the shower to pretending to be Mimi Marquez swinging from the wooden bars and ladder of my bunk bed belting melodies from my favorite show, Rent. My mother implanted theatre into my heart since the beginning. But I was always missing just one aspect of the magic I knew, performing. I yearned to hear the patter of my feet on the stage, for my voice to echo throughout a theater during a rehearsal, to transform into a different person and tell their story. But when I was younger I guess it just wasn't my time yet. My family didn’t really have the money to enroll me in any sort of performing arts program and our town lacked a theatre program in schools until high school. Performing in the comforts of my own bedroom would have to do until I got to high school. Once I got to high school I eagerly auditioned for the 2 shows they produced a year, desperate to finally be on a stage. Yet, there was something missing from the experience, I wasn’t aware of it at the time and it wasn’t until my friend Kevin pulled me aside during one of our rehearsals and informed me about the pre professional theatre company he was apart of. Soon enough I convinced my mother to sign me up for theatre camp at Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts. Essentially it’s where I found myself as a performer and as a person. Before the program I hadn’t ever taken risks or made choices on stage as a character and as myself in life. If I was ever in a place with the opportunity to meet new people I wouldn’t take advantage of it, usually I’d wait until people came up to talk to me because I just couldn’t bring myself to talk to people. My confidence was at an all time low before Gaslamp, I didn't believe that I could accomplish anything. However, spending 8 hours a day for a month with a group of accepting, loving, intellectual, inspiring people changed me and I learned so much about myself that I…

I never walked in heels a lot, let alone on stage. I was really nervous because the whole time I was thinking what if I trip, fall, and then eat the stage with my face. Once the pageant started I felt comfortable for some reason I still haven't fully figured out. I walked out in my outfit of choice first. It was more of my tomboy side with the jeans and shirt but I was not about ready to attempt a pageant with the first outfit not being something I was going to be uncomfortable in. After I successfully had walked on stage in the bright lights and had left the stage, it was time to change into business wear. Just to get back on stage and do it all again, walk to the marker, pause for five seconds and continue to the second, and so on. Once the business wear was complete I knew it was the dreaded formal wear with my new long sparkly dress with four inch heels. Along with walking on stage in heels and a long dress that was uncomfortable I had to answer an impromptu question. I have no problem speaking to people but once I get on stage and I am handed a microphone I am not sure what could happen. I answered my question with grace and not a stutter in my…

At the age of fourteen, I decided to audition for La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. I will never forget the lady at the front desk and how her eyes pierced through me like a fierce beast studying her prey. As I reflected on mothers’ encouraging words, the beast rudely yelled out my number and said, “Are you going in there dressed like that? Good luck, you’ll need it!" She then directed me to the auditorium where, by God’s amazing grace, I found favor with the judges and made it into La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. That victory was short lived due to my mother’s decision to relocate us for safety reasons.…
