Elementary Classroom Observation
Most childhoods are defined by an unabashed innocence that evaporates as we age. When individuals reminisce on the earlier years spent with society; images of freedom and longing often accompany. Elementary schools, especially kindergarten classrooms, are the prime examples to find children in a setting where they interact without outside stimulus. The subculture being observed is a kindergarten class whose predominant identities as children, siblings, and members of society all intertwine. Kindergarteners interact with one another without any of the prejudices of adulthood; the behavior observed is influenced by intermingled peer relationships and a teacher´s positive guidance.
Walking inside the International Technology Academy in Pontiac, Michigan, I quickly make my way to the elementary section of the school. Ms. Thomas´ kindergarten class would be the subject of observation. The room is tucked away in a small corner, cradling an exercise room and a brick wall. The authority figure for the class, Ms. Thompson, addresses them in a calm positive manner at all times. She is constantly surveilling the classroom, walking from station to station, admiring the students activities with exclamations of, ¨Good job!" and ¨That´s so cool!¨ The teacher´s remarks help to validate the students work while enforcing positive attitudes towards learning. In one vivid moment, an African American girl sitting adjacent to Mya at their station suddenly smacks Mya´s hand away from a puzzle without provocation. Another student runs to inform the teacher and Ms. Thomas approaches the table. She calls the African American girl to the side and explains the importance of respecting others. With a nod and a shrug, the girl apologizes and they all return to their activity. The incident is seemingly forgiven and

    I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious.     It was obvious that Ms. Brown had created a plan for this lesson by observing the progression of the skills that were being taught and that they were presented in a logical order that aided student comprehension. Both the students and the teacher were familiar with the skills and the delivery. She also posts lesson plans online. Objectives and expectations of the lesson were communicated to the students on a special place on the board, at the front of the class with essential questions and " I can" statements. Ms. Brown was able to gain the students' attention for the lesson with a hook type activity. It was an engaging question for the student to answer that was related to the topic. Students worked independently, in pairs and in groups and read a selection either by themselves or with another student. The material was then presented in a graphic organizer by the teacher with illustrations and relevant examples provided by the students. They also read the selection (either our loud to a partner or to themselves) and then the material was displayed in the form of a graphic organizer for the visual learners.     Blue made sure to see that the students were receiving positive feedback. When each of the students entered the room, they retrieved their binders and all sat down quietly. Each of the students were very respectful to each other in that whenever someone raised their hand to speak, they were the only ones who spoke. There was no character development program or a posted set of rules displayed in her classroom. In her classroom she did the majority of the talking while the students listened and answered her questions. In the high school classroom, there was quite a bit of talking and disruption among the students in the beginning.     This approach emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. The main practices of this approach are morning meeting, establishing rules, energizers, quiet time, and closing circle. Even though Science class was taught in the first period, their day officially started with the morning meeting. The children gathered in the large group area, greeted each other, had a small activity, and got the morning message from Ms. B. She also gave them the schedule of the day, and the rotation stations they were going to be working on that morning. The children are separated into four groups; blue, green, red, and orange.
