Electronic Addiction
Electronic gaming and internet addiction is a new community problem. A number of studies have been done to address these problems, but there is not a reliable treatment in which clinicians can rely on to diagnose and treat them. Although there is not a valid empirical study that supports the treatment of video game and internet addition, some professionals have created useful assessment tools and treatments to address these types of disorders. Online video game addiction research has mostly been focused on negative effects, but according to Park this excessive gaming has some positive effects. These positive effects have to do with the emotional satisfaction and concentration as well as, curiosity and enjoyment. Video games, online gaming, and Internet become a problem when people start neglecting their daily responsibilities such as family, work, school, and start spending hours using these devices without noticing their excessive use.

It is a fact that excessive video gaming causes health problems, and health professionals have stated several concerns regarding video game playing. During the last twenty years rheumatologists have diagnosed gamers with “Pac-man’s Elbow.” This is a condition characterized by muscle and skin problems from repeated small strokes while playing. Gamers also complain of numbness on fingers, hands, and elbows due to excessive playing. Additionally, hallucinations, wrist and neck pain, problems with tendons, strain injuries, and wetting the bed are also health problems caused by excessive video game playing.

Additionally, game addicted individuals may be at risk of suffering epileptic seizures. Doctors do not have enough evidence of the correlation between epileptic seizures and massive multiplayer online games players, but they agree that MMOGs players need to be aware of the risk ,physiologist stated that other internet addiction health problems are feelings of anger, social withdrawal, tiredness, lying, and decrease in work and or school performance .

Illnesses associated with Internet and Game Addiction, Anxiety disorders, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and social anxiety are mental illnesses associated with Internet addiction. In a study performed to students in Germany, 78% of them showed impulsivity and depression associated with Internet addiction. Hypomania, dysthymia, obsessive compulsive personality disorder, and avoidant personality were evident at a higher percentage in people Internet disorder.

One last key area of research that has appeared in relating self-regulation to video games, concerns that of pathological gaming or personal gaming addiction. Pathological gaming is often seen in much the same light as to how pathological gambling is viewed in the DSM, in the sense that they are viewed as a set of addictive behaviors (Liau et al., 2015a). This obviously presents a concern for a number of people who play video games, or parents who let their children play games, in hope that they do not develop an addiction to this activity. Two separate studies that were conducted, analyzed potential predictors as to what may cause a gamer to develop a pathological gaming habit, one investigating video games as a whole (Liau et al., 2015a),…

Computers, the Internet and video game consoles have invaded our homes and have also become extremely portable. With video gaming becoming more popular every day, a consumer needs to be aware of the affects of this new addiction.…

Generally, any form of addiction has its own consequences. In an interview by The Kernel, a gamer codenamed Leo testified: “I would not inflict this game upon anyone.” He later said in the interview that he spends 12 hours a day in front of the computer screen, sometimes even longer. But his story is not unusual. Internet forums like olganon (Online Gamers Anonnymous) show cases where in lives of some gamers are lost – literally. On 2005, a South Korean man died after a reported 50-hour video gaming session and in 2012, a Taiwanese man was found dead on his gaming chair, arms outstreched for his computer. We would not want that to happen to anyone. BBC Online News even reported that a Chinese father named Mr. Feng hired “virtual assassins” to hunt down and kill his son's avatar as a way of stopping his son's video game addiction.…

I would like to thank Professor Lee for allowing me to conduct my research on Computer Game Addiction, even when it seemed like such a laughable subject. He helped me get IRB approval, conduct the study, and write a thesis, all the while believing that I could finish it all. I am happy to report that he was right. I would also like to thank Professor Chapman, her long hours with me in the library culminated in my results section. Without her patience and guidance, completing this paper would have been impossible. Finally, I would like to acknowledge Jonathan Handali for proofreading my paper. Abstract As computer games grow in popularity, the negative effects of usage should be studied. Computer games (games played on a computer, tablet, or any web-enabled device) have salient qualities, especially MMORPGs, that cause addictive symptoms. I investigated computer game addiction and usage in Trinity College students. A sample of 114 students (M =20.4 years of age, 61% female) was divided into a non-addicted, social player, and computer-addicted group based on Young's Diagnostic Questionnaire. My results showed that there is no significant correlation between day quality and computer game usage, and no significant correlation between emotional dependence and group. Not enough computer-game addicted subjects…

On the contrary, to those who believe the addiction is real, they might recognize this desire as only a means to relax, have fun, or have an excuse to sit around and be lazy. According to the New York Times article, “Video Games Aren’t Addictive,” “Playing video games is not addictive in any meaningful sense. It is normal behavior that, while perhaps in many cases a waste of time, is not damaging or disruptive of lives in the way drug or alcohol use can be,”(Ferguson, Markey). They, like so many others, believe that playing video games is not addictive in any manner. It only takes up someone’s time, but it is not damaging people’s lives like drugs or alcohol. No, it normally does not damage someone’s life for the reason that it is not harmful, but the addiction is still there. In the same article, Ferguson and Markey also claim that, “the American Psychiatric Association has identified internet gaming disorder as a possible psychiatric illness, and the World Health Organization has proposed including “gaming disorder” in its catalog of mental diseases, along with drug and alcohol addiction.” The journalists disprove their own argument by showing that professional psychologists fear that gaming is almost, if not as addictive as drugs and alcohol. Video games have an addictive quality about them. Yes, they are not as effective or harmful as drugs and alcohol, but they cause the addictive behavior to become hooked on substances…

Video Game addiction is the action of playing video games or computer games excessively and compulsively to the extreme that can make one forget the real world and live in the virtual world. Addictive behavior is defined by six main aspects: salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, symptoms, conflict, and relapse. Video game addiction satisfies the definition of addiction. On the other hand, the effects are moderately slight, and can be resolved by reducing the hours played. At this time, video game addiction has not been proven a syndrome. Genetic factors do not influence video or computer game addiction, but studies shown this behavior is unattached to another condition such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] or mania. There is no evidence of a connection between video game addiction and substance abuse. Also, the American Psychiatric Association did not have enough evidence to include video or computer game addiction on the new list of disorders in 2012.…
