Elberto Diablo Case Study
Elberto Diablo was never a bright child. He always managed to get in trouble, and didn’t have many friends until he met the leader of the biggest cartel in Mexico. Both men had a long conversation about their street lives, and it was made clear that Elberto would need to endure a hazing in order to become a member of the gang. Elberto was battered and bruised, but he was able to hold his own against the leaders men. When he joined the cartel, the leader Hector Rodriguez gave Elberto the nickname “Devil” because of his hellacious attitude, and swagger. However, one night during a deal in Tijuana, 18 year old Elberto was about to make one of the worst mistakes of his life. A couple minutes go by, and a smoke grenade is suddenly thrown into the room. “It’s the DEA get down Elberto!” screams Hector. …show more content…
“I think I got one!” Elberto yells happily.
“We gotta get outta here amigo!” Hector replies. A few minutes after their daring escape, Elberto realizes that his cousin Rico wasn’t waiting outside to pick them up. Elberto was starting to get very worried, but at the time, Hector had no time for worries. The 2 young men hopped into the car and started to slowly drive away from the deal as if nothing had happened.
Another few minutes go by and the car comes to a stop. “Look out!!!” screams Hector.
The car gets crushed by an oncoming vehicle and both Hector and Elberto are knocked unconscious. However, Elberto was able to wake up quickly and ends up hearing a man that sounds exactly like his cousin Rico. At this point in time, Elberto realizes that his cousin Rico had set him

When Hector arrived at the house another man (Miguel) was already there waiting to be hustled across the border. Then one night the coyote came and took the two men to a warehouse, there at the warehouse were many men. Finally, the truck came to a stop, the hole was reopened, and the men were “hustled” out of the truck into a second warehouse (25). From the second warehouse all the men was took into a office where they was given an new identification card, the start of their new life as an “illegal American” (26). Hector went to South Carolina with Miguel the man he met in the old house, they waited on a bench for Miguel’s cousin Pablo to come and pick them up.     After days of psychological torture, Pablo is broken down and accepts that he will be executed. Right before he is to be shot, Pablo was then interrogated one last time on the whereabouts of his friend Ramon. Pablo is ready to die before betraying his friend but decides to lie instead. This was Pablo's arrogance, feeling brave and malicious, Pablo tells the Fascists officer; "Ramon is hiding in the cemetery, in a vault or a gravediggers shack" (34) Pablo does not believe Ramon is hiding in the cemetery, but wishes to give the guards a hard time, all within pure intent, intending to lead the guards astray from Ramon's true hideout.
