A Complete English Version of El Filibusterismo from the Spanish of
José Rizal

Translator's Introduction
El Filibusterismo, the second of José Rizal's novels of Philippine life, is a story of the last days of the Spanish régime in the Philippines. Under the name of The Reign of Greed it is for the first time translated into English.
Written some four or five years after Noli Me Tangere, the book represents Rizal's more mature judgment on political and social conditions in the islands, and in its graver and less hopeful tone reflects the disappointments and discouragements which he had encountered in his efforts to lead the way to reform.
Rizal's dedication to the first edition is of special interest, as the writing of it was one of the grounds of accusation against him when he was condemned to death in 1896. It reads:
"To the memory of the priests, Don Mariano Gomez (85 years old), Don José Burgos (30 years old), and Don
Jacinto Zamora (35 years old). Executed in Bagumbayan Field on the 28th of February, 1872.
"The Church, by refusing to degrade you, has placed in doubt the crime that has been imputed to you; the
Government, by surrounding your trials with mystery and shadows, causes the belief that there was

Here are some final thoughts to end this paper. If you were in Rizal's position, would you actually continue to express your thoughts and fight for freedom even if it means risking your own life? Or will you stop expressing your thoughts to your fellow countrymen and save yourself from being killed? Remember, it's easier to say things than to do it, but maybe if you think of it as for the sake of those who are suffering then it wouldn't be so bad to sacrifice ones self isn't it? And perhaps you are that one spark that people need in order to light up an entire nation that would have a great impact on the entire course of our history and of our…

One of the great books written by our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, is Noli Me Tangere. It is a Latin word meaning "Touch Me Not". He started writing it in Madrid, Spain on 1884 and continued in Paris, France. He was finished it in Berlin, Germany on February 1887 and had printed at Berlin Buchdrukrei Action Gesselschaft. His first novel was dedicated to his Inang Bayan, the Philippines or it called the motherland. The history stated in the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" of Hariet Beecher Stowe, that tells the suffering of Negro slaves under the cruelty of the Americans, gave our hero the idea. In writing this book, he saw the similarities of this to the cruelty experienced by the Filipinos under the Spanish rule. This was published at Imprenta Lette in Berlin, Germany on March 1887 by the help of Dr. Maximo Viola who saved Noli Me Tangere by lending Rizal 300,000 for the printing of 2,000 copies of the novel. As thanks, Dr. Rizal gave the original manuscript and the PLUMA he used in writing the novel to Dr. Maximo Viola.…

(Reaction Paper) Uninterested to heavy drama stories, I find this novel totally boring. Although I’m terribly afraid to sound disrespectful to the man I owe my freedom, I have to speak my mind. The triumphs of antagonists and sufferings of the protagonists are recurring in the story which makes me question its real intention. Is it really to inspire or to expire? I was about to lose interest in the subject when I stumbled upon the following texts in www.wikipedia.org: “...Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines written by a group of Filipinos. His proposal was unanimously approved by the Filipinos present at the party, among whom were Pedro, Maximino and Antonio Paterno, Graciano López Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente and Valentin Ventura. However, this project did not materialize. The people who agreed to help Rizal with the novel did not write anything. Initially, the novel was planned to cover and describe all phases of Filipino life, but almost everybody wanted to write about women. Rizal even saw his companions spend more time gambling and flirting with Spanish women. Because of this, he pulled out of the plan of co-writing with others and decided to draft the novel alone.” Suddenly it rang a bell and I was reminded thereafter with the fact that this is neither to create a world of fantasies nor to spice up life with sweet romances but rather to lay the foundation of reform. The story is not to tickle the heart but to bombard it with truths hard enough to awaken its consciousness. The novel is full of dreadful events: the misfortune and death of Don Rafael Ibarra and the dumping of his remains into the river, the beating up and death of Crispin, the insanity of a loving mother, Sisa, the death of a sympathetic Elias, the unfortunate turn of events that stopped Maria Clara’s and Ibarra’s marriage and eventually, the insanity of Maria Clara. These plots inflict so much pain which can tease the…

The first part started with the birth of Rizal up to his early education. While there was no definite measurement of being a genius during his time, Rizal was noticeably gifted. He showed exceptional talents in painting, molding, sculpting and writing. But it was writing which served him well. At an early age, he wrote the Memorias de un estudyante Manila, which is about the memoirs of his childhood. At 8 years old, he wrote the famous Sa Aking mga Kabata. It was said that his father, Francisco Mercado, owned almost 1000 books during that time, and that he made Rizal read books like El Amigo de los Niños. This influenced Rizal’s passion for writing. The second part was about his higher education. It was during this time when he wrote A La Juventud Filipina which was deemed as his first recognition to the Filipino youth. His other work was El Consejo de los Dioses, won an award in Manila. In 1882, Rizal left for Madrid, after the then-Governor General Jose Maria dela Torre granted him a scholarship. In Madrid, Rizal wrote Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa, his first propaganda sent and published in a Tagalog newspaper in Manila. The third part focused on his life in Europe wherein he started writing Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. It also stated the challenges met by Rizal before publishing Noli Me Tangere. Through the help of his friends, he successfully published 2000 copies of the said novel before going back to the Philippines. The fourth part told a rather personal and lighter aspect of Rizal’s story by documenting about the women of Rizal’s life, the letters of some of these women for Rizal, as well as Rizal’s letters for some of these women. The fifth part highlighted Rizal’s life after publishing Noli Me Tangere. Because of the controversial novel which brought ire to the…
