Unless a person lives in a country where technology is prevalent, one’s life is most likely influenced by technology in one way or another. For example if one looks at the devices in a modern day home, a refrigerator, an electric stove, a blender or a toaster oven will be found. In the living room, one will most likely have a television and perhaps a computer. A large percentage of people own cell phones to stay connected with friends, family, colleagues and business associates. The most up to date cell phones have so many features , it is like having a personal computer in the palm of ones hands. Technology is very available, meaning it is easy for competitors of all sizes to use and learn how to use the internet. This can make it difficult for businesses to keep up with technological changes and vastly increase the number of competitors in a market as smaller business can use technology to offer value to a wider range of consumers. Technology also increases the possibility of crime. A technologically advanced employee of a business can steal funds and make it difficult for a company to trace. Hackers can access personal and financial data of customers who trust the company to keep information safe. Businesses must spend time abs money developing safeguards against these events. Technology can also be extremely harmful to a person’s health. It can cause complications with a person’s lungs, skin, and overall health. It can cause competition and rivalry between two or more people. Technologies such as social networking can lower a person’s self esteem and in some cases cause people to commit or consider suicide as a last option. People of todays society and of any age can benefit and hinder from any of the many technologies that are out today. People today live in a time of and place where instant gratification is not only expected but demanded. Technology has catapulted people today to a society of now and people in today’s society lives are affected by this technology in ways people are aware of and ways people are not.
The ozone layer protects the earth from the ultraviolet rays sent down by the sun. The ozone layer is depleting because of modern day technology such as cars, trucks, boats, airplanes and ships. If the ozone layer is depleted by human actions the effects on the planet and all mankind can be catastrophic. Thirty miles above the earth is where the stratosphere is located. At the top of the stratosphere is the ozone layer. The ozone layer absorbs the ultraviolet rays sent down by the sun. Ozone is a bluish gas that is made of three oxygen atoms. (D G Korich, 1990) The oxygen atoms inhaled by humans consist of only two oxygen atoms. If ozone is inhaled by humans the effects can be deadly. Ozone is responsible for greenhouse gasses. Chlorofluorocarbon is a used to cool down refrigerators and air conditioners. It is also used in cleaning agents. It is made out of the gasses chlorine, fluorine and carbon. When these gasses rise into the air they break apart and bond with other gasses in the atmosphere to form deadly gasses such as chlorine, fluorine and carbon. When these gasses rise into the air they break apart and bond with other gasses in the atmosphere to form deadly gasses such as chlorine monoxide (Lippmann, 1989). Effects of human manufacturing are displayed in The Book Of Eli.
