The Effects of Strength Training It has been said by medical professionals that if exercise was able to be put into a pill it would be the most popular prescribed drug for those with health issues. There are several types of exercise, most fall in the categories of cardiovascular exercise or resistance training. While cardiovascular exercise is effective and important we will go in depth the effects of resistance training. Strength training is important for everyone, from the elite athlete all the way to the aging senior. When performed correctly, resistance training has a myriad of positive benefits. Some of these include; fat loss, retaining or building muscle, increasing bone density and lowering blood pressure. As you can see from the short list it is a no-brainer as to why everyone should do some sort of resistance training. When you preform moderately heavy strength training your body has to provide your muscles with energy and nutrients. This process is taxing on the body and takes calories to perform. Calories in their simplest form provide the body with energy. When you use more calories throughout the day than you consume you will lose weight. One can lose weight with any kind of exercise, heck one can lose weight without doing anything besides walking. The key word there is weight, which is a combination of fat and our lean body mass or to put simply, precious muscle. We’ve all heard the saying “Use it or lose it” well in this case it is the truth. We have to challenge our muscles in order for our body to keep them around because our body will understand that they are required for the heavy resistance training. So therefore, pure fat loss will be most superior when doing resistance training. As well as retaining and sometimes even building muscle. Although most do strength training for the fat loss and muscle building effects, there are many health benefits as well. Challenging our body with weight training will improve our bone
