CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction
Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a text/message. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text/message. Proficient reading depends on the ability to recognize words quickly and effortlessly. If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read. The ability to read provides academic success as well as success throughout life (Irlen, 1991). A skillful reader will sustain two major reading characteristics. One is the speed and ease at which they read the text. The other is the understanding and internalizing of the text being read (Jager-Adams, 1994). Ouellette (2006) states “reading does not only involve decoding and visual word recognition: The end goal is comprehension” (p. 556). Over the years, the use of color for visually enhancing a person’s reading ability has undergone a transformation from the use of colored chalk on chalkboards to using black ink on colored paper. Using colored paper for the background of a text may enhance the eye’s ability to focus and adhere to the print at hand. The ability of the eyes to perceive color and color hues vary from person to person and are individually specific with regard to optimal color interpretation (Evans, 1974). The researcher observed that many students love to read. When studying, students use different kinds of books and reads it, whether the paper is printed on any color of paper. However, this

When reading a specific word, experienced readers know what the word is instantaneously, the name and meaning of the word come readers extremely fast. In most cases it is actually difficult to look at a word and not know its meaning. When looking at a word printed in a certain colour it is difficult to simply state the printed colour and ignore the colour that is actually written; the meaning of the word. This phenomenon is known as the Stroop effect. It shows that even when we try to ignore a well known memory it automatically gets retrieved. If the word meaning and colour are the same then facilitation appears; this results in a faster reaction time than compared to when the word meaning and colour are different,…

The stroop effect causes interference within people when the color of a word and a word, the name of a color, are incongruently matched. We tested this phenomenon to see if our results would be held constant as reviewed by existing literature. Our experiment used different conditions which consisted of same, different, and mixed. With these conditions we were able to see that there was a statistical significance between the associations of words and colors when they are incongruent with each other as noted through the participant’s performance.…

As a Learner I enjoy reading, listening or hands on experience in my current occupation or a prospective career. The yearning for knowledge has been part of my life since I was in grade school. Reading has not always come easy for me, I did not learn to read until entering the fourth grade. Looking back as an adult, I believe I had an undiagnosed learning obstacle. I realized with the correct lighting or the use of an overlay on bright white paper seemed to help the words stay on the page, and allow easier and better retention of the information.…

Before we continue, at this point it is important to define the term higher order reading skills. While many children can read individual words or indeed a string of words to form sentences they may not necessarily understand what it is they are reading about. Even a child who is a fluent reader may have difficulty in comprehending a text. “Fluency is important because it is closely related to comprehension” (www.ibe.unesco.org, 2008). This author continues by saying, “comprehension is the process of deriving meaning from connected text it involves word knowledge as well as thinking and reasoning.” Higher order reading skills help to develop a child’s ability to comprehend a text.…

A most common explanation for the Stroop effect is that college students have automatized the process of reading (Francis & Neath, 2015). A College student might therefore find it difficult to perform a task like such as the Stroop effect test. (Francis and Neath, 2015). Stroop found that participants are slower to identify the word when the name of the color was different than the font color (Francis & Neath, 2015). The automatic processing of the color name of the word interferes with identifying the reporting of the color of the ink the color name is in (Francis & Neath,…

Comprehension helps students understanding what they are reading. “Short term memory helps automatic decoding which is necessary for readers to comprehend and understand what they are reading” (Pardo, 2004, p.273). Pardo (2004) states that “Teachers help students get to this level of automatic decoding by providing instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics at all grade levels” (p. 273). When students spend to much time focusing on sounding out words they have less energy to think about meaning (Pardo, 2004). Students in lower grades will work on phonemic awareness and phonics but older students will practice automatic decoding through spelling vocabulary and high word frequency (Pardo, 2004).…

The production of light emitting diodes has its use both in industrial and commercial information displays. Hardly comparable against other advertisement mediums like tarpaulin, it is easy to interchange, is cost effective in the long run rather than changing a new Ad, it is programmable, and more likely to caught the attention of viewers. In Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan, engineering department, a great number of students are uncomfortable of the enrollment system being unorganized. Students can hardly wait when other students try not to fall in line and outsmart the former. Some students get bored and create a conversation with other students, not knowing that it is their turn. As an electronic hobbyist and engineering students, we want to design a display system that can help this enrollment problem. By this, students just have to get a priority number and wait for their turn. With large screen display and an audio speakers, the LED dot matrix display system can be useful in calling attentions and also has its other purposes like reminding school activities and schedules.
