Effects of aggressive video games in children

The video game industry has been part of our home life for over 30 years now. Today’s technology advances at a fast rate and with this the ability for the video game industry to create a more “realistic” feel. In the 1980’s computers and video games were seen as a tool for teaching and less used as a leisure pass time. In the years that have followed, researchers found that indeed video games and educational software can have positive effects in academic skills. It can also have negative effects if the children are not monitor by an adult and the time he or she spends playing a game. Throughout these years we have seen the exacerbated increase in the time a child spends playing games. I am specifically talking about arcade games, computer games, and home console games such as PlayStation and Xbox. Now, researches, teachers, parents and physicians question the effects of video games in our children’s lives. Among elementary and middle school population, research has shown that girls play an average 5.5 hours a week and boys an average of 13 hours per week. Recently, with the outburst of smart phones, IPad’s, and portable computers the ability for kids to play games is not only design for the home environment, nowadays, it can be found literally everywhere. The video game industry has taken advantage of this new era, and with this, the ability to create video games for a younger population. The preschool child spends approximately 28 minutes per day playing. Today, children spend more time playing games, but not at the expense of television viewing which has remained stable at about 24 hours per week. Video games are natural teachers. Children find them highly motivating; they are interactive and the child engages with them; they provide repeated practice; and they include rewards for skillful play.
