World War II ended and many American soldiers returned home. Their return brought on an excessive amount of babies to be born. These children born between 1946 and 1964 became known as the baby boomers.
Today this group of people would be between the ages of 40 and 58 years. There are around 76 million boomers today in the United States alone. This makes up 29% of the current United States population. In Canada this generation of people are referred to as "Boomies" and they have a population of 6 million. In Britain this group is known as "the bulge".
During the "boom" in 1946 birth rates rose from 2.8 million to 3.4 million over one year. According to Bill Geist another baby boomer turns 50 every 7 seconds. This statement proved to be very accurate.
The baby boomers have become one of the most studied periods in American history. They have several significant differences between their lifestyles and the lifestyles of older and younger generations. According to studies baby boomers have higher divorce rates and lower remarriage rates than any other age group. They will most likely go into old age with one or no children and without a spouse.
Baby boomers have shown to be economically stronger than the generation before them. The main reason for this discovery is women have more successful careers while their parents did not. Also, couples are able to receive two pension checks as well as two social security checks.
Today's children will have fewer interactions with the elderly than baby boomers had with their parents and grandparents. There will be fewer family support systems and a larger need for nursing home care due to less support in the community.
Baby boomers will be particular when it comes to living in nursing homes. They will not want to share a room with anyone and they will not want to walk down the hall to take a shower. They are more likely to want a lot more drugs, a lot more sex, and a little more rock and roll in their lifestyles.
Baby boomers will use advanced technology with chronic care in nursing homes and hospitals due to lack of nurses and nurses' aides.
Another change will be a greater difference between the two classes of healthcare - poor and rich.
Overall baby boomers have had significant effects on today's society. They have changed everything from the population and growth rates to the types of care received after retirement.
