Abstract

Insect repellents are essentially needed these days. The frequent occurrences of floods nowadays lead to the increasing cases of Dengue. The abundance of cockroaches also increased the frequency of Diarrhea because of the microorganisms that these cockroaches carry. We knew that insect repellents are not easy to carry around because you still need to spray these to insects. With this, we decided to make a more appropriate product for busy people that are prone to insects. This insect repellent fabric softener can repel insects because of the presence of Lemon Grass that has an insecticidal property.
In conducting this investigatory project, we extracted 50 grams of Lemon Grass and added it to a solution of baking soda, water and vinegar. However, we decided to add Sampaguita extract to improve the smell of the solution. We made sure not to put too much vinegar because this can make the smell bad.
After making the product, we washed 2 rags, one with our product and one with commercial insect repellent fabric softener. We placed them in boxes with one cockroach each and observed. We also made another set-up that wasn’t washed with any fabric softener for our control set-up. After observing for 20 minutes, we concluded that our product can really repel insects such us cockroaches.
To those who are planning to make this product, we can highly recommend you not to add a lot of vinegar because it will cause the product to smell really bad.

Summary Too many house-flies are coming into people’s homes during the summer when they have their doors and windows open. This is a problem for the people living in these homes as house-flies carry diseases that they transmit onto food around the home. We need to come up with a solution that decreases the number of house-flies coming into the home while allowing people to keep their doors open. After considering numerous ideas I concluded that the best way to do this is via a eugenol based fly spray.…

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

Current insect repellent t-shirt companies only offer up to 25 washes. “Guardian claimed that its proprietary repellent formulation bound to fabric fibers more tightly and durably than existing technology”. Source: Leihana C. TaguiamAbstract:Fungi are one-celled organisms that cause discomfort and health risks in living organisms. The purpose of this study is to control the growth of fungal pathogens. Aspergillus flavus, Penicillum specie and Curvularia specie. By using pure extract of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) and 50/50 combination of both. The study focuses in determining which of the three treatments will inhibit specific fungi. After being tested and identified which among of the three treatments is the best, we suggested using it as an additive in cosmetics and medicine.In-vitro testing comprised the methods of identifying the anti-fungal property of the treatments. From the collection of plant samples to reading and analyzing of data, fungus growth took for four days then the treatment assignment was conducted. The fungi must have similar growth rate to have accurate results. Results showed that pure extract of Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) is the only treatment that controls the growth of Aspergillus flavus. The two other treatments failed to inhibit all three fungal pathogens. Pure extract of Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) can be used as an additive to some cosmetics and medicine because of its anti-fungal property against Aspergillus flavus. Adjustments of concentrations should be conducted upon Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) to prove the effectiveness and to test its suitability as a moisturizer. Further experimentation may also identify the active component of Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) that makes it as an anti-fungal against Aspergillus flavus. Future researchers can use the pure Lemon grass extract (Cymbopogon citratus) as an additive to cosmetics and develop this to…

Nowadays, many families are suffering from poverty and health problems. Some of these health problems are caused by different chemicals that they inhale from the things around them and by different chemicals in products which can cause them problems such as skin irritations. One of those things is the fabric softener, so the researchers came up making an alternative fabric softener that is harmless to the health of the people, inexpensive and at the same time environmental friendly.…

This essential oil proved to be one of the top performers in a comparative study of insect repellents published in July, 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The two commercial sprays tested kept bugs away from 1 to 3 hours. The results of a 2004 California State Science Fair project show that lemongrass is 30 percent less effective than commercial preparations containing DEET, or diethylmetatoluamide, in repelling mosquitoes. Lemongrass, or cymbopogon ciatrus, may still be a suitable substitute for persons who cannot tolerate DEET. A study published on the CBS News website compares natural-based insect repellents against DEET products. According to the news network, natural products like lemon grass and citronella work by scent and must be reapplied more often than DEET-based products.…
