According to, SkillsYouNeed.com, listening is the “ability to accurately receive messages in the communication process”. It is also the vital part towards effective communication and without it, messages could be easily misunderstood. The difference between listening and hearing is that the former requires focus and sole attention while the latter is just involuntary since it is part of the human body to have the ability to hear. Listed below are the top ten principles of listening: 1. Stop Talking.
We need to listen when somebody else is talking and we do not interrupt or finish their sentences. Stop and just listen. We can have the chance to talk by clarifying something only after the person has finished talking.

2. Prepare yourself to listen.
We need to focus our attention to the speaker and put other things, important or unimportant, out of our mind since the human mind is easily distracted by other thoughts and could therefore hinder us to understand and absorb the message.

3. Put the speaker at ease.
We should help the speaker feel free to speak their thoughts. We should remember their needs and concerns. Nodding and use of other gestures that display appreciation and encouragement could also be of help. Maintain eye contact but not to the point of staring at the person. We need to show and let them feel that we are listening and we understood what he/she is talking about.

4. Remove distractions.
As what I’ve mentioned above, focus on what the speaker is saying. Avoid doodling, arranging your things, comb your hair, examine your hands, and all other things that could send a message to the speaker that you are bored and/or distracted.

5. Empathize.
