People communicate for different reasons, to portray their feelings, emotions, pain, opinions etc., the communication should be professional (formal) or personal (informal) it is important within a social work environment that information is recorded, as it may be called upon for legal reasons, all communication are confidential, and on a “need to know” basis, communication between colleagues is essential, so that it ensures a continuity of care for the service user, and all staff are aware of the current needs of the client.

1.2EXPLAIN HOW COMMUNICATION AFFECTS RELATIONSHIPS IN AN ADULT SOCIAL CARE SETTING Communication in the workplace is an important part of our role, it builds good relationships with colleagues and service users, if communication techniques we use are ineffective, this could lead to problems with the relationships within the workplace, if there is ineffective communication between the following relationships then lack of trust and confidence could give the wrong type of care and in turn could miss out on important information, which could result in harm. 2 UNDERSTAND HOW TO MEET THE COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE NEEDS, WISHES AND PREFERENCES OF AN INDIVIDUAL 2.1 COMPARE WAYS TO ESTABLISH THE COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE NEEDS, WISHES AND PREFERENCES OF AN INDIVIDUAL I can find out an individual’s preferred communication methods by asking the client, reading their care plan, asking relatives and colleagues, reading medical notes etc., I can also make my own observations as I support them, and share my findings with my colleagues, and record in their care plan, their individual communication needs should be reflective of their cultural beliefs or religion, and above all their individual preferences according to their needs. 2.2 DESCRIBE THE FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PROMOTING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Is the environment adequate for the communication (well lit, quiet, confidential etc.) Does the person have the abilities to understand (dementia, mental health, learning disability) Do you need to adapt your communication for the individual (speak louder, use hand gestures etc.) Does the person need an interpreter or family member to be present How is the person going to respond to the communication

Are you invading the individual’s personal space
Do you need to write down questions for the individual to understand better Are you sure of the facts, that you are communicating

2.3 DESCRIBE A RANGE OF COMMUNICATION METHODS AND STYLES TO MEET INDIVIDUALS NEEDS There are times when we need to adapt our communication style to meet the needs of individuals and use aids to help them enhance their communication, hearing loss is an invisible disability, so it can become a big communication barrier, hearing impaired people have to concentrate very hard to pick up information in stages and written information, aids that can help these people are hearing aids, sign language and lip reading. Loss of sight can make a person very disorientated if in a strange place or if they lose their glasses, when caring for a person who is blind, verbal communication has an increased importance, Learning difficulties and language barriers can be difficult to communicate if a person speaks no English, therefore you may need to use picture boards, to enable them to understand or interpret what they require, or a female service user may not wish for a male care caring for them, when caring for a person whom suffers from dementia/confusion, we should be aware that even the basic forms of communication may be difficult for them to understand/interpret. If a person has suffered from a stroke, they may become very frustrated when trying to communicate, therefore a speech therapist may be involved to suggest exercises which may make things...
