The purpose of this experiment was to isolate two unknown bacteria and perform a series of selective and differential tests to correctly identify each. After the bacteria was isolated a series of differential and selective tests following the dichotomous key attached were used to identify each bacteria. A Petri plate containing nutrient agar was used in the experiment. A sharpie was used to section off four quadrants of the dish for the different bacteria. Cotton swabs were used to sample different areas of the building. Cotton swabs used by me and my lab partner were used to test areas from the hallway water fountain, vending machine, hallway floor, and the door handle to enter the classroom. Once done with this process, the cotton swabs were swiped on the four different quadrants of the Petri plate, covered and sealed, and set aside for a week to let the bacteria grow on the agar.…
The 2 areas that were most surprising were the outside front door knob and the corner of the bathroom tub. Being that not just myself and my fiancé touch it I expected that the outside door knob would harbor a lot of bacteria. It is touched by numerous people coming and going from our home. It had absolutely no visible growths that could be observed with the naked eye. The corner of the bathroom tub is a completely different story! It had just been cleaned 2 days prior to this experiment. The growth that was observed after only 48 hours of incubation was disgusting.
