Edward Scissorhands Character Analysis
In Tim Burton's expressive film, Edward Scissorhands (1990), audiences are exposed to the gothic world of Edward, played by Johnny Depp as he struggles to fit into the conformed and opposing world of the town below the dark mansion that he inhabits. This film is mainly directed at teens and adults and not children under eleven years of age. Even though most children would understand the storyline and recognise the characters intentions, they may not fully appreciate the true morals and themes of the story. The story compromises of many loveable and hatable characters but one character stood out to me the most and that character was 'surprisingly' Edward. Possibly because he had a charming personality, his opinions on the town was almost always …show more content…
Left with scissors instead, Edward lives alone in a dark mansion overlooking a stereotypical, American, suburban town. Peg Bogg, a sweet, caring door to door saleswoman and her family live under the shadow of Edward's looming house. One particular day, after no luck in selling any makeup, Peg catches a glimpse of the black house in the sideview mirror of her car. Not knowing who or what could be behind the closed doors of this house, she decides to be brave and enter the house, determined to sell the makeup. Seeing him cowering in the corner, Peg discovers Edward and after an abrupt introduction, she decides to take him down to the town so that he may interact with humanity for the first time. I think that the main message in this film is that just because everyone has the same opinion about something, doesn't mean it's right. The vast majority of the townspeople in the film all had the same opinions about Edward. They liked him at first and then started to oppose him once bad things started happening that were associated with him, but this was only because of Joyce's feelings about him. They all followed what Joyce said. Joyce's opinion became everybody else's opinions. Only Peg and her family understood Edward's true self and his character because they talked to and interacted with him. Most of the townspeople probably hadn't even met Edward and yet they assumed what Joyce said was true. Therefore the message is to have your own opinion and not conform to everyone else without knowing the situation or intentions

Leslie Edwards (Matthew Perry), a clumsy aristocrat, and the hilarious Bartholomew Hunt (Chris Farley) are competing against the famous Lewis & Clark to be the first to chart and make it across the United States to the Pacific Ocean. In the beginning of the film, Edwards has high hopes to head the first expedition to make it across the U.S., but while he has the want and the money, he is a sheltered man who knows nothing of the wilderness. To aid in his journey, he hires the services of a supposedly knowledgeable wilderness-man and tracker, Hunt, who, once they get underway, turns out to be less than advertised (too good to be true haha). Aided by a crew of various rugged frontiersmen, they are also joined by their group's version of Sacagawea, a young Indian woman by the name Shaquinna (incredible), who plays a big part in helping them find their way across the dangerous and unknown land ahead, as well as, eventually becoming Edwards' love interest.…

The character that I am choosing is Dwight Schrute from NBC’s comedy “The Office.” Dwight is an off-beat and slightly odd character whose best friend is Michael Scott his boss. Despite being a little off the beaten path Dwight is Dunder Mifflins top sales person and he has been recognized for it many times. Dwight is not shy about how he feels and it is very easy to see how Dwight views life. He is definitely a nerd and enjoys Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. He also idolizes fictional TV characters like Jack Bauer from “24.” He is very authoritative and if given any power will take advantage of it. This is exemplified when he is put in charge of the office and decided to make his own currency that the employees had to use while working. He also constantly refers to himself as Assistant Regional Manager to make himself sound important even though his real title is Assistant to the Regional Manager. His little sense of humor and commanding personality may be why he is such a great sales person. He is able to push people into sales and make them buy products.…

From imaginative chocolatiers to a man with scissors for hands, Tim Burton’s use of unique and outcast characters make his films some of the most recognized in the world. Burton’s style is as distinctive as his characters by creating fantastical but mysterious worlds. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands are some of his most popular films and both illustrate characters who are outcasts onto the society around them. Burton uses the contrast of lifestyles in the characters, low key lighting and characterization within Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands to show that even though outcasts may not ever fit it, they can have a positive change on society and aspire great success.…

People’s intentions are sometimes very unclear. It seems like they are doing one thing but are really have some other intention in the end. Like when you ***. In Loraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, Walter Lee Younger is very similar in that aspect. He comes off very money hungry right from the beginning and seems somewhat selfish wanting to use his father’s insurance check. We can also see Walter lee is a very ambitious character but in the end, really just wants to provide for his family.…

Having the will to survive is the physiological force to fight, either mentally or physically, for one’s survival. Ellen shows this skill throughout the novel by dealing with child abuse. One example of this is her ability to cope with her father who is a self-destructive alcoholic. In the novel, Ellen is left to live alone with her father after her mother sadly passed away. This makes her life a lot worse because when her father is drunk he expects her to take her mother’s place. For example, one night when Ellen was at home her father tries to grab her and actually calls her by her mother's name, “Get away from me...That is not me. Oh no that was her name. Do not say her name to me. That was her name. I am Ellen” (Gibbons 45). This scene…
