This thesis is located in medical anthropology because it grants insight into how and why people act around health and sickness in their everyday lives, the ways they deal with the challenges to health and the constraints they experience in creating healthy settings for themselves. This chapter opens with theories of medical anthropology regarding health - care and then discusses critical medical anthropology (CMA), one approach proposed within medical anthropology to take account of the fact that health and illness are not simply biomedical events, but are impacted upon by the social, political, economic and environmental contexts within which people are located. Following this approach, the notion of social capital is discussed to understand…

Learning is a natural ability that is wired into many animals DNA; the way that humans should learn has been debated by the various educators because of the endless ways to teach. Teachers and parents take this matter seriously like Ralph Waldo Emerson in “From Education” and Todd Gitlin in “The Liberal Arts in an Age of Info-Glut” who created essays on education; and Billy Collins in “The History Teacher” entail for then and who wrote a poem concerned with the status of education. These people show what the importance of education is entailing what learning should and should not involve; a teacher should respect and have patience for children; a teacher should also let a child have creativity and lessons of the past.…

Higher education is critical in a developed economy. In most developed countries, education is considered a basic right. Hence the costs of higher education is highly subsidized by governments. This results in a significantly reduced number of students that need to work to pay for their education. The United states is one of the few counties, developed or otherwise, where the almost all the burden of paying for higher education is put on the student. This has certain interesting consequences. One of them is the relatively large proportion of college students working. The increase in tuition in the past decade have cause this to increase even further. In “For Many College Students, A Job (or Two) to Pay Tuition”, an article in the New York Times, DAVID KOEPPEL found that every year, more students were looking for an campus jobs. New York University employed 2000 more students in 2003 compared with previous years. The percentage of college students working has been growing since the 1906s (Stern and Nakata, 1). How this affects students and whether or not students should work therefore have become increasingly important questions.…

CANING AS A SOLUTION By : Luqman Rohaizat (5 Omega 2009) At first thought, caning may seem like an inhumane punishment for students, who are not yet fully matured in their thinking, and are still learning along the way. “It just hurts them, physically and emotionally, without doing anything else” I hear concerned parents say. But then again, is there a more effective way to punish and control students? Moreover, nowadays there seems to be a noticeable rise in disciplinary problems involving students in schools nationwide. We need to find an explanation for this rise in disciplinary problems, in order to find the ideal solution for the problem. By my knowledge, we can clearly relate the rise in disciplinary problems with the withdrawal of caning, or any sort of physically inflicted pain, as a punishment for students. What I mean is, when students don’t get punished, they will get into more trouble in the future. Based on this, I fully agree that caning is an effective way to punish students. This is where caning can be part of the solution. Please, let me explain. Students get into trouble because it is their nature to make lots of mistakes and learn through them. Yes, they learn new and important things in life through mistakes. It is okay to make one or two mistakes once in a while, but when a student gets into trouble, or keeps repeating the same mistakes one too many times, this indicates a problem. Maybe the student does not realize that he is causing trouble, or hurting other people. For all we know he might even be enjoying causing trouble. If this student is not punished, he is certain to do more harm again, and this is not good for everybody. As a solution, caning will make the student realize that what he is doing is wrong, and that he should never make this mistake again. As you can see, caning becomes part of the long-term solution to shape a student’s thinking pattern, for the benefit of himself. Another thing to consider is that because of the…

When it comes to education, we disregard the question to why it’s so valuable. “Excitement, thrill, apprehension and all those human emotions were governing me as they do to every other individual who enters an unknown environment.” Isn’t this what education should feel like? I mean to be completely honest, the word ‘education’ screeches at my ears. The depth of the word just doesn’t spark anymore. It’s as if, the purpose has turned into a limitation rather than this wondrous life fulfilment of joy and knowledge. In my opinion, an education may come from any single life experience that changes how one perceives future experiences, and sometimes groups of those experiences. It’s a lesson that can be taught anywhere. Not in a compact white room decorated with petty class-work forced out of an individual. Education is an important human activity, born with the birth of the human race and shall continue to function as long as the human race lives. If this is the case, are we not somehow attained by this outlook of the world’s perception on life? Surely we can choose what to experience or not. And if THIS is the case is our society, our community and civilisation stating that without education, man is a splendid slave, reasoning savage. What is this? The creativity of the mind should never have to compete with the stereotypical term of systematic instruction. The definition itself contradicts the belief we have of it.…
