Edrophonium Research Paper
Edrophonium is a compound consisted of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. Hydrogen bonds are present because some of the hydrogens are bonded to other nitrogen atoms and other oxygen atoms. The chemical formula for edrophonium is C10H16NO+ . Edrophonium’s molecular weight is 166.24g/mol. Oxygen contributed 72.249%, hydrogen contributed 9.701%, nitrogen contributed 8.843%, and carbon contributed 9.642%. Solubility is a chemical property referring to the ability for a given substance, the solute, to dissolve in a solvent. It is measured in terms of the maximum amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at equilibrium. It is important in predicting the parameters of the concentration of the drug in order to achieve the desired pharmacological …show more content…
Edrophonium’s solubility is probably very easy to achieve due to the fact that it is a liquid. Edrophonium is used as part of a medical test to help diagnose a muscle disorder called myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is a bodily disorder in which the person’s body produces autoantibodies which negatively affect things in your body called nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors transmit outgoing signals from the presynaptic to the postsynaptic cells within the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Edrophonium helps this disorder due to the fact that it is an effective acetylcholinesterase inhibitor which means that it will reduce the muscle weakness by blocking the enzymatic effect of acetylcholinesterase enzymes, prolonging the presence of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft. Also, edrophonium is sometimes used to reverse the effects of certain medications used to prevent muscle contractions during surgical procedures. Some of its common names used in medicine include, enlon and tensilon.
