Edgar Allan Poe's 'the Premature Burial'
The Mind vs. the Undead

The Romantic Era was a time when writers wrote with passion in relation to elements of writing such as the fantastic or supernatural, the improbable, the sentimental, and the horrifying. Edgar Allan Poe was one of the many writers who used elements such as these in his writings. Poe was famous for reflecting the dark aspects of his mind in a story, creating detailed imagery intriguing the reader. The fantastic and supernatural elements are expressed in The Premature Burial as impossible and in a sense, horrifying. The idea of people walking after their believed death is very extreme thinking in a world that seems normal. The writing style of Edgar Allan Poe shows the writer to be of a dark nature. In this story, he focuses on his fascination of being buried alive. He quotes, "To be buried alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these [ghastly] extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality." page 58 paragraph 3. The dark nature is reflected in this quote, showing the supernatural side of Poe which is reflected in his writing and is also a characteristic of Romanticism. Poe uses much detail, as shown in this passage, "The face assumed the usual pinched and sunken outline. The lips were of the usual marble pallor. The eyes were lusterless. There was no warmth. Pulsation had ceased. For three days the body was preserved unburied, during which it had acquired a stony rigidity." page 59 paragraph 2. The descriptive nature of this writing paints a vivid picture that intrigues the reader to use their imagination and visualize the scene presented in the text. This use of imagery ties with aspects of Romanticism because of the nature of the descriptions Poe uses. Describing the physical features of one who seems dead is a horrifying perspective as not many people thing about the aspects of death. The mind is a very powerful tool when it is exploited to think about situations out of the ordinary. Describing in vivid detail

Death. A strong topic, frequently but solemnly discussed. However, when I read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”, I was immediately captivated by the new angle brought to my attention regarding death. While the topic of death is usually associated with either sympathy or horror, Poe succeeded in portraying a feeling caught between the two; and at the same time bringing forth new feelings I would never thought to consider regarding death. These feelings reflect a sorrow so deep it morphs into a psychological madness, a feeling that the pain death brings has ruined one forever. After analyzing this poem I came to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” demonstrates that the sorrow the death of a loved one brings will stay with you forever. Poe communicated this theme through abstract language & connotation, tone, and allusion.…

By describing a dark scene at the beginning of his writings, Poe was able to draw the reader in by his use of setting to describe a dark place. “I looked upon the scene before me… the simple landscape…a few white trunks of decayed trees…” (The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe.) By focusing on the nature setting, Poe was able to incorporate Romantic themes in his works and make them dark my focusing on the death (“decayed trees”) in nature. The setting in the opening scene of The Fall of the House of Usher is able to convey Poe’s style of Dark Romanticism using technique.…

Poe uses strong imagery to elaborate upon the tone when he says, “The wine sparkled in his eyes and the bells jingled. My own fancy grew warm with the Medoc. We had passed through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs.” This assists in the creepy tone of the short story as it describes in great detail the catacombs, filled with piles of bones throughout. It makes the reader imagine what being deep, deep inside a catacomb would be like and that thought is quite menacing. Another case of strong imagery is when Poe wrote, “Its walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size.” Similarly to the previous quote, this one also provides a sense of unclean, evilness. Montresor and Fortunato are deep inside the catacombs and there are bones strung about everywhere, in piles and on the walls. The reader imagining this picture can fully grasp the tone of “The Cask of…

Edgar Allan Poe; one of the most famous gothic writer known to America. His work consists of dark mysteries which mostly revolve around death. Many say that the reason of Poe's gothic writing style would be because of his past. It is well known that Poe’s work would reflect himself in one way or another. As a matter of fact, according to a short story written in 1839 titled, “An overview of the ‘Tell Tale Heart,’” John Chua mentions that “Critics who have studied Poe sometimes suggest that his characters resemble him both physically and temperamentally”. This helped his work to be transparent and gave the readers a chance to know what was actually happening inside of Poe’s dark mind. The readers get to see how the events in his life bleeds…

Poe’s style of writing is creepy, spooky and eerie, but with this style it is effective in creating a dramatic atmosphere in the story that makes the reader tremble, but want to keep reading. The first example I saw of this was “with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit” (Poe 708). Another example of this overly dramatic writing is the passage where they both hear her described by Poe as “as I placed hand upon his shoulder, there came a strong shudder over his whole person; a sickly smile quivered about his lips; and I saw he spoke . . . ‘miserable wretch that I am!—I dare not—I dare not speak! We have put her living in the tomb’” (Poe 720). Even at the very…

Many of Poe’s stories have several similarities, for example, “The Masque of the Red Death”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Premature Burial” all have a dark setting, death, fear and symbolism in them. Edgar Allan Poe writes these stories based off of his own life and fears. His biggest fear is being buried alive, which most stories include. Some of these poems, novels, and short stories contained different types of folklore and fairy tales that authors of this period searched for in order to make their stories and subject matter more captivating and enjoyable ("Romanticism"). The writers of this time period were always looking for a new, interesting story to tell or writing style to use. The use of these literary techniques enhanced the writing of these authors. One of these authors is Edgar Allen Poe, the writer of many world-famous stories such as “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” The Romantic Period was drenched in gory and morbid literature. In the article “Poe’s ‘The Masque of the Red Death’,” the author explains, “The narrator, in most stately terms, proclaims in the last paragraph of the Tale: ‘And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay’” (Slick). Poe ended his tale on a morbid note, which emphasized the tragedy that occurred and the destruction it led to. Like many other authors of the time, Poe focused on the depressing parts of life, such as death and loneliness, instead of on the cheerful parts of life, such as birth and marriage. Poe also tended to focus on the strange fears and deranged thoughts that people experience. As explained by Charles E. May about “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “[The narrator] says the moan the old man makes does not come from pain or grief, but…

Poe uses mood and atmosphere to portray the single effect of eeriness. The mood is most firmly established when the narrator arrives at the Usher mansion. Approaching the mansion on his horse, the narrator uses descriptive words such as “an iciness”, “a sinking, a sickening of the heart”, and “an unredeemed dreariness” to describe the atmosphere (Poe 1). These descriptions set the mood for the story and evoke fear in the reader. The most eye-catching description,“an unredeemed dreariness”, highlights that the dreary atmosphere cannot be vanquished or overlooked by the narrator.…

Some of the characteris that he uses to describe in this story are horrible death and terror and anger. Both of these describe the theme of gothic literature. The Black Cat represents horrible death because in the story the man kills a cat in a violent unnecessary fashion. He kills the cat and has no good explanation for killing it. “One morning, in cold blood, I slipped a noose around its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree;” (Poe 7). This quote represents horrible death because of the way that he killed his cat and how he had no real reason on why it should have died. Also in the story The Black Cat, Poe shows the characteristic terror and anger. The way that he shows terror and anger in the story is when he killed his wife out of anger because she was trying to save the cat. He chose to kill her in a gruesome way that was out of anger. When he killed her he showed terror because of what he had done. “... I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain. She fell dead upon the spot” (Poe 19). This quote shows terror and anger based on his actions that he took to kill his wife. Throughout the story The Black Cat, gothic literature is shown through the characteristics horrible death and terror and…

Around halfway through his poem the author begins to question why he cannot embrace the beauty around him: “From the torrent or the fountain - From the red cliff of the mountain - From the sun that round me roll’d - in its autumn tint of gold.” At first read these lines seem to portray beauty but looking deeper there is another theme. The red cliff or blood on the mountain and sunlight rolling around him instead of shining on him, and the autumn setting where things start to die are all examples of the grim picture Poe paints. He sees the…

    Death in American Literature

The theme of death has always been a presence in American writings – from early colonial diaries and through the nineteen century – because death was perceived to be ever present in people’s lives. Descended from the tradition of Puritan religion and also influenced by sentimentalism and Romantic views of death, Emily Dickinson presented a highly individualistic treatment of death in her poems. Emily Dickinson and Edgar Alan Poe are often compared and analyzed together because of their “death” moods in their works. Poe and Dickinson had many similarities in their lives: both had early losses that haunted throughout their lifetimes, and both dealt with their tragedies in destructive ways. Poe used alcohol and drugs; Dickinson used emotional and physical isolation. They were non-typical persons of their times, and both Poe and Dickinson created beauty with their poetry, putting images and pictures in the reader’s mind with pictures of nature and romance, capturing these emotions. But their “darker” side that makes them most similar attracts readers and encourages finding answers. When reading Dickinson and Poe, a reader deals with sorrow, loss, terror, and the final step – death. They conveyed a Gothic writing style that can pull the reader into their nightmares.…
