When it comes to the topic of ecotourism, most of us will readily agree that it is a less harmful alternative to mass-tourism and that it promotes responsible and low-impact travel to areas where flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary drawing power. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what the impact of ecotourism actually is and what its long-term consequences are. Whereas some are convinced that ecotourism provides the basis for sustainable development, particularly in places that suffer from exploitation and excessive resources’ usage, and that could only improve the general conditions of the local people, others maintain that we are still far from true ecotourism, for many are those in the tourism business who market as ecotourism what is actually nothing short of a green varnished conventional tourism. In order to gain a deeper understanding of this thorny issue it is fundamental to examine the experience of the countries that have, at least in theory, profusely embraced ecotourism, evaluating its natural and social impact on fragile environments, and the national cases of the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Tanzania provide notable examples of how the success, or failure, of ecotourism is greatly determined by the extent to which national laws and development strategies are implemented.…

With a simple click of the button, your entire week itinary to India could be planned, booked and paid for. Traveling is as easy as ordering a pizza. At the same time as countries start to evolve and cater to the tourism industry, authenticity is lost. The essence of traveling is to experience something completely different from what is at home. However, agricultural production has been on the decline due to continuous conversion of agricultural land into residential, industrial, leisure and commercial lands. Moreover, the continued dependence on synthetic commercial chemicals has led to the loss of fertility and productivity of the soil. Over the years, however, there has been an increase in the swing from conventional to organic agriculture. Organic agriculture, seen as a niche agriculture sector, is promoted as an effective and sustainable approach to food security, farmer’s profit instigation, and resource management. Aside from organic farming, the Department of Agriculture welcomed agricultural activities that encouraged active in the preservation of the environment, such as agriculture tourism and ecotourism as an additional initiative for agricultural development. Locally, the La Top Organic Farmers’ Multipurpose Cooperative (La Trinidad Organic Practitioners MPC) has been a recipient of different assistance to promote organic farming as a viable agricultural production practice. With the development assistances, La Top was able to be a successful model for organically produced goods and evolved into a trainer, consolidator, marketing arm and as a standard for authentic organic vegetables in the province of Benguet. Despite all these successes and recognition, information on the benefits of organic farming has not been widespread. Conventional farmers are still hesitant to shift their farming production techniques. Objectives and Methodology As an alternative means to promote organic agriculture, tourism was identified as a pro-poor initiated system that can highlight the potential economic opportunities of organic farming. Recognizing the opportunities of tourism, the project “Replicating La Top Success through Capacity Building and Alternative…
