Abstract
What is the concept of ecological services? What are ecological services of rivers and why are they important? What ecological services of rivers will decline due to human influence and why they will decline?
Keywords: purification, wildlife, decline

Ecological Services of Rivers
What is an ecological service? An ecological service is an ecosystem which serves all living organisms through all types of environmental purifications. We are using these services to help better service us and to also help the environment. There are multiple types of ecological services which provide for animals and human. Some of these ecological services consist of but not limited to purification of air, water, groundwater recharge with wetlands, and rivers. Ecological services are valuable for many reasons, including economic benefits, protection of human health and safety, and support of recreational or aesthetic enjoyment. When ecosystems are not healthy, some or all of the services they provide to people may be lost. Replacing these services is often completely beyond current technology, and even when we can replace them, it is usually prohibitively expensive to do so. The overall concept of these ecological services is to provide a better ecosystem to live and thrive as a whole.
The two most important ecological services from a river would be purify water and provide habitats for wildlife. The purification of water is a huge benefit to us as humans today. Water makes up a huge percentage of our body. Drinking clean purified water helps keep us from getting sick from diseases. This purified water occurs in nature in several ways. When it rains forest, woodlands, and wetlands act like a sponge for the water to slow down and enter streams, which flow into rivers. Naturally the world cleans itself. We as humans have messed with the natural purification from rivers so we now purify our water again to drink.

    2. Describe three benefits and three costs of damming rivers. What particular environmental, health, and social concerns has China’s Three Gorges Dam and its reservoir raised? Benefits include preventing floods, providing drinking water, and facilitating irrigation. Costs of dams include expenses, slowing of river flows, and erosion of tidal marshes. Many people were displaced from their homes, tidal marshes eroded, and many pollutants were trapped in the reservoir.…

For example, there are three main Abiotic factors, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and suspended solids. Dissolved oxygen is a very important factor in the survival of organisms in the river. Studies show that “Both producers and consumers (like zebra mussels) take up oxygen during respiration causing oxygen levels to drop. Zebra mussels also reduce oxygen levels by eating producers (like phytoplankton) that release O2 during photosynthesis” (river ecology pg.5). This effect that the zebra mussels have is a very negative effect. The reduced oxygen levels will make it so animals can no longer live in the river. This causes the area to lose a major food supply to the larger animals surrounding it. This will have a huge impact on the environment and the food…

Ecology is the scientific study, which focuses on the interactions between organisms and their environments as well as interactions with other organisms. Stream ecology is a subset of ecology that observes the interactions between the organisms found within the stream and their interactions with the stream itself. A contributing factor to stream ecology is leaf degradation. Leaves that fall into a stream create a significant impact on the energy flow and nutrient cycling of the stream’s ecosystem. Leaves provide an abundant amount of organic material for many of the organisms within the stream. Decomposed leaves are a particularly important carbon source for…

An ecosystem is composed of the producers, consumers, decomposers and the living organism that interact and reside in this habitat. They are part of the food web and their roles are important in maintaining the environment. Producers make food, the consumers feed on it but at the same time the decomposers also break down the food to go back to the food web. Mother Nature has assigned different roles (plants and animals) that will sustain our environment and as caretakers we must preserve the ecosystem (no land clearing) so that it will continue to thrive and…

Runoff is a problem when farmers use too much nitrogen on their crops to help them grow and the excess nitrogen flows into creek and other bodies of water when it rains. This excess nitrogen causes more algae to grow in an algae bloom, which causes the bacteria that eats this algae to multiply as well and use up all the oxygen in the ecosystem. This leaves other organisms to die in the process called eutrophication. Another way that humans can affect a water ecosystem is by littering near or even far away from a body of water. Wind, runoff, and other conditions can carry the rubbish, such as plastic bags, bottles, and paper, into the creek which decomposes over time and leaves harmful chemicals and gases. These dangerous pollutants can decrease the water quality and cause organisms to die (Umgeni Water Amanzi). Overall, humans can impact water ecosystems in a lot of…

Ecology, most simply put, is "the study of relationships between organisms and their environment". (Encyclopedia Britannica) Garrett Hardin, writer of the essay Lifeboat Ethics: The Case against Helping the Poor was a professor of human ecology at the University of California at Santa Barbara and had some extremely harsh opinions about the solution to global population issues. As a professor of human ecology, Hardin studied the relationship between humans and their environment, and in this case the entire globe. It is a well known fact that environmental degradations, unequal wealth distribution and exponential population growth are growing problems in the world, and in his essay, Hardin explains that there are relatively simple solutions to these problems. While Hardin's solutions to the interconnected global environment, economic and population problems are harsh and potentially immoral, Hardin convinced me they are the only solutions to a growing global issue.…

Water conservation is one of those resources to be seen as an aspect of extreme urgency. Often, the impacts on the environment and these natural resources like water, air, soil, and biodiversity are so intense that decrease future profitability for the exploitation of non-renewable resources. Two of the main priorities of water conservation are the management of watersheds and the control of environmental pollution. A healthy watershed protects water supplies, feed forests, plants and wildlife, and it also maintains fertile soil that supports community…

    River Rhine Case Study

There is a number of ways the river environment is protected. Government and local and national bodies all have strategies for looking after the Rhine. The ’strategies and success’ section outlines some of these strategies and explains how successful they’ve been. 50 million people live in the Rhine basin, most in one of the many major cities situated directly on the river or on one of its major tributaries. These cities have grown around the Rhine because of its mass of even flow water, a result of winter and spring precipitation and summer melt water. The river supports highly developed industry, trade, agriculture and transport. Now humans use 80% of the former floodplain of the river. Roads and railways cross the areas behind the protective dykes. Urban growth has spread to the fertile river plains. The river has also been deepened in parts and meanders have been cut off in order to keep the river navigable. The 50 million people who live in the river basin produce a lot of waste. Even when waste is not dumped directly into the river, rainwater can still wash toxic…

Bangladesh is a small country comparing to adjacent countries but ecologically very diversified so is in terms of Biodiversity too. It is known riverine country. There were more then 800 rivers but many of them are lost partly or totally due to our past mistake and political unrests in past half of the century. We have mighty major rivers like Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna as big river. The minor rivers like Dhaleshari, Kodak etc carry more important role in overall national ecosystem than those major rivers. Disappearance of wetland & Minor Rivers due to unplanned development caused much extinction of our native species. Native species can rise naturally without any aid of human being including birds and fish eggs. Presence of sufficient number of native species of any country is an important indicator for sound environment. Now a day, habitats are being destroyed in Bangladesh for different causes so ultimately the native species are being extinct which causes great damages of the environment condition. So, many native…
