The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established and incorporated in January 1st 1995 at the amendment of the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) in 1994 with the aim of regulating international trade. The creation of this organization clearly underscored the acceptance and commitment of trade liberalization by most of the international communities. Upon signing and ratifying the WTO Agreement, each member state of the WTO committed itself through a series of agreements to ultimately liberalize its trade in goods, services and trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights. Each member state signed the WTO Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes as well as the Agreement relating to the Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM). This action required member states to periodically subject their national trade and economic policies for examination to ensure that their respective mandates are in keeping with the WTO's commitments. With a system as the WTO agreements that are so complex, it is expected that there are many critics. Some consider the effects that occur from decisions made out of these agreements as deliberate attacks on those Member countries that are not considered as “most favoured nations” or MFN (developing countries). The WTO addresses these concerns and view these criticisms as fundamental misunderstandings of the ways they work. The WTO is a forum through which countries can thrash out their differences on trade issues - individuals can through their governments, participate in these discussions or debates but must do so based on proper understanding of the workings of the system. These include; The WTO dictates policy; The WTO is for free trade at any cost; commercial interests take priority over development and over the environment and over health and safety; The WTO destroys jobs, worsens poverty, small countries are powerless in the WTO; The WTO is the tool of powerful lobbies; weaker countries are forced to join the WTO and The WTO is undemocratic.…

The World Trade Organization has proven to be the top most successful joint trade institution of the 20th century. In spite of the lack of a central authority, the WTO has sustained trade assistance for the better half of the last five decades. Yet despite numerous setbacks the WTO remains an important facilitator of world trade. What other World institution has the ability to settle international trade disputes (for panel and appellate bodies), within a suggested 16 months, (Hohmann, 2008).…

Tariffs are taxes on imports or goods into a country or region. This is one of the oldest forms of government involvement in trading activities. Tariffs are implemented for two clear economic purposes. They provide revenue for the government and they improve economic returns for firms and suppliers of domestic industries that face competition from foreign imports. This protection comes at an economic cost to consumers who pay higher prices for imported goods and to the economy as a whole through the unproductive allocation of resources to the import competing domestic industry. Therefore, "since 1948, when average tariffs on manufactured goods exceeded 30 percent in most developed economies, those economies have sought to reduce tariffs on manufactured goods through several rounds of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs Trade (GATT)." (Carbaugh, 2000) When coupled with other barriers to trade they have often constituted formidable barriers to market access from foreign producers. Tariffs, that are set high enough, can block all trade and act just like import bans. Non-Tariff Barriers (NTB) are also a tactics that are used to regulate the amounts of imports. Voluntary export restraint (VER) "allows…
