The researchers will use a quantitative non-experimental descriptive-correlative research design. Quantitative research is defined as a traditional scientific method which uses a general set of orderly disciplined procedures to acquire information and moves in an orderly and systematic fashion. (Polit and Beck, 2004) A non-experimental research design does not use manipulation and control of the independent variable and conducted mostly in natural settings under natural condition. (Trochim 2006) The descriptive-correlative research is to describe relationship among variables rather than to infer cause and effect relationship. (Polit and Beck, 2004) The researchers will use a descriptive correlational type of design to describe the relationship of the eating habits to the incidence of obesity and hypertension among Filipino adults. The researchers are to get the Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure result of randomly selected Filipino adults who are obese and hypertensive and compare the type of food they eat; sweet, salty or fatty food. Sampling procedure
The type of sampling procedure the researchers will utilize is a non probability purposive sampling procedure. Non probability sample means not everyone has the chance to become a sample and purposive means that a criteria is set for the purpose of the research study. The subjects are either male or female who are classified as hypertensive by their blood pressure results and obese as classified according to their body mass index. Ethical Consideration
Before the interview, the researchers will explain the purpose of the study to the respondents. Respondents are asked whether they would like to participate or not. If they refuse to participate, the researchers will respect their decisions and will find a way to find another respondent that is available. Respondents will ask to complete an informed consent forms which were available both in English and Filipino. Confidentiality was a concern to both the respondents and also to the respondents itself so the researchers needed to assure all parties that all the data that will be gathered will remain confidential and will not be used against them or their families or even the facilities. Data will be gathered in locations and time periods wherein all the respondents are available. At the end of the study, the researchers will inform the respondents whatever the results of the study and will provide a list of dietary guidelines that causes Hypertension and Obesity and foods to eat to prevent acquiring the said lifestyle-related diseases. In appreciation to the respondents, a token will be given to them by the researchers. Data Gathering
The researchers will get a signed consent from the respondents before the start of data gathering. They will gather data through the use of questionnaire to be answered by the selected respondents. Each of which will be weighed and be measured for their height to compute for their Body Mass Index needed as criteria for identifying obese respondents. Their 3-day diet recall will also be monitored. For the hypertensive respondents, their blood pressure will be monitored using the blood pressure apparatus.
The researchers will use the following statistical treatment
Percentage is computed to determine the proportion of a part to the whole. To get the percentage, divide the frequency of the responses by the total number of respondents then multiply by 100. (Salustiano, 2009) The researchers will tally the frequency among respondents who are male and female. The respondents will also tally the frequency of the respondents who aged 20-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60. Occupation of the respondents are also to be tally. This will be use to determine the demographic data among the respondents.
