Eat, Pray, Love Report

Book Report

The non-fiction story I decided to read was "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Her story is about a celebrated writer's irresistible, candid, and eloquent account of her pursuit of worldly pleasure, spiritual devotion, and what she really wanted out of life. Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned thirty, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want—a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. Elizabeth Gilbert has written a very entertaining and enlightening book about her travels to Italy, India, and Indonesia. This is the story of her travels and explorations of three different cultures, in an effort to find balance in her life. Following her divorce, Elizabeth experienced a crushing depression resulting in panic, confusion, weight loss, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world—all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

Another interesting story was “Anguiano Religious Articles”. This was a very creatively written story which not only utilized a large amount of cultural depictions and imagery, but it was also very religiously humorous. Told from the perspective of a woman, the story describes her hatred toward a store owner. Before journeying to the store, she is told that this store owner is a “crab ass”. The story is very short, but humorous…

The first heartbreaking story that I read was about a young girl name Srey Rath. “Rath’s saga offers a glimpse of brutality inflicted routinely on women and girls in much of the world” (p. xiii). Rath is a confident Cambodian teenager. When Rath was fifteen years old she decided that she would go to Thailand to work as a dishwasher. Her family ran out of money and she wanted to help pay bills. Rath thought she would be safe because she was going to travel with four other friends who were promised the same job.…

We are required to obtain certain amount of nutrients from food. Food can simply divide into 2 groups, macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients composition. Both of the groups mentioned do affect the metabolism rate. According to Hulbert and Else, dietary fatty acid will affect the metabolism rate and some of the polyunsaturated fatty acid will increase the metabolism rate (1999). Meanwhile, different kinds of animals have their own unique requirement for macro-nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates and fat. Moreover, most of the food intake is driven by achieving the required protein intake. Animals on a low protein diet will over eat carbohydrates and fat until the protein requirement has been satisfied. If this case occurred in human, obesity will occurred and may have a serious impact to their health. On the other hand, both low energy intake and starvation will decrease the metabolic rates, growth and offspring number and size. In this experiment, we will find out that how does low energy diet affect animal’s metabolism and fitness of the Artemia, which is a species of marine animal by divide those Artemia in to 2 groups and fed by 2 different kind of food. One of them will be fed by low energy diet while another group of Artemia will be fed with high energy diet. After a certain period, both group of Artemia will be used for this experiment to find out the difference of oxygen consumption and acitivity level. I chose to read a book that sounded really interesting to me. I found out about it last year during one of the Book Festivals. The book is called Zlatas Diary, and it is written by Zlata Filipović. It is from the Memoir/Autobiography genre. This is a diary that was published, and the author became really famous because of all the things that she had to go through, and because of her experiences. She had many journalists coming to interview her. The setting is in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war in 1901 through 1903.…

I greatly enjoyed both of my servant evangelism encounters, they were not always easy, but in the end they are extremely rewarding. My first servant evangelism encounter was when I went home for spring break. When I was home my church ran a spaghetti dinner on Saturday night, and me and other kids would serve people spaghetti. I started off serving noodles, and then worked my way down to the garlic bread, when I encountered a lady and I began talking to her and I asked her how she was, and worked my way into talking about religion and Liberty.…

I would believe that the same shock and awe she felt as a girl viewing the images in a National Geographic magazine contributed to her love and interest in traveling and living abroad. Elizabeth traveled to Brazil, and ended up staying for quite a few years, living in affluent homes in Rio de Janeiro. She spent much time traveling the amazon, and other undeveloped parts of the Brazilian jungle. She wrote about her experiences traveling, and what was unique about her travel writing was that she not only described the scenery, but she talked about many other parts of the travel experience that a reader would not expect to hear in a poem about travel. She wrote about her perceptions of other people who were traveling alongside her, how she believed their own life and experiences influenced how they felt and saw Brazil and the amazon. Her insights are unique, sensitive and intuitive. She also wrote about the poor in Brazil; beggars, tribes living in dilapidated homes on the Amazon, and those of the lowest economic status. Those who knew her felt that she identified with the poor, and was sensitive and hurt by the brutality in which the poor are treated. She often wrote about home, and felt that without a sense of home, there is no travel. This was an important dynamic of both her writing and her liking of…
