How come we hear terms, like global warming, climate change, earth hour? Did anyone talk of them in the childhood days? I don't think so. Today, we have television documentaries, class lessons and a lot of awareness spread through media and social workers. We all know that our earth is undergoing a drastic change. We hear it may have drastic impact on the lives of each one of us. But what exactly is Earth Hour? Earth Hour is a global initiative by millions of people around the world, each contributing their mite by turning off their lights to observe "Earth Hour." What is the objective of switching off the lights just for an hour once a year? Is it going to make a difference? The concept of Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, it was at Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Then a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues. But there’s more to it than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It’s all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for our planet. While Earth Hour has let people show in their own small way their concern for what is happening to earth, it however in no way should serve as a cover for the global polluters to hide behind and dodge their commitments. The US it appears is planning to observe the event in grand style and many US based multi-national including Coca cola had vowed to shut off lights at 8.30pm today. If the true spirit of the observances to triumph the commitment should be extended beyond the hour.
