EARTH DAY SKIT: “How Earth Day Began” This skit can be performed at an Earth Day assembly for an entire school or a single class

Scene 1: At Home________________________________________________ A student returns home from school. While eating dinner, she discusses her day with her parents. The end of April is approaching and her school [insert your school name] is preparing for its Earth Week festivities. Teachers and students have been talking about the week’s event and she can’t wait – excitement is in the air! She tells her parents that Earth Week events begin tomorrow and that she will participate in a day of tree planting; bring a litterless lunch, and even wear something green! After helping her parents clean up after dinner, she heads off to bed. As she falls asleep she thinks of all that she has learned about Earth Day so far. Student: Hi Dad! Dad: You’re home a bit later than usual, how was your day? Student: Oh Dad, today was sooo exciting. Mrs. Ali taught us all about the history of Earth Day and she spoke about all the fun activities that we’re going to do for Earth Day. Dad: Really? Student: Yep! Our school is planning to have a week of festivities to celebrate how much we care about our earth. I’m so excited I can hardly wait! Dad: Let’s sit down and have some dinner. Your Mom and I prepared your favourite dish!

Mom: And while we eat you can tell us all about the activities. They sit around the dinner table. Mom: So, what’s the plan for tomorrow? Are you going around the community and picking up garbage? Student: Nope, that’s Friday, along with an assembly and guest speaker. Tomorrow we are planting trees, bringing in litterless lunches and wearing green. Does anyone know wear my green overalls are? Dad: We’ll have a look for them; we’ll make sure that you are as ‘green’ as can be. Student: I’m so eager to plant trees;

    “2B” says the disembodied voice from the intercom, echoing against the colorless brick walls of the classroom. The wooden door opens to show Sister Mary John, a woman of seventy years, walking in to call us to lunch. Sister usually wore the typical nun outfit to school – long black dress and hood which only exposed the face – but today was Student Appreciation Day 2003 (I am 8-years-old), which meant all the students would eat hamburgers and hotdogs outside. Sister, wanting to avoid the heat, decided to exchange her outfit for clothing better suited for the Texas heat (e.g. light colored shirt, shorts, and hat).…

    “The One Day of The Year” was set in Australia, in the 1960’s. It explores the universal theme of Father- Son conflict against the background of the beery haze and the heady, nostalgic sentimentality of Anzac Day. It is a play to make us question a standard institution, but it is the likeability and genuineness of the characters that give the play its memorable qualities: Alf, the nobody who becomes a somebody on this day of days; Mum, the anchor of the family; Hughie, their Son, with all the uncertainties and rebelliousness of youth; and Wacka, the Anzac, with his simple, healing wisdom.…

    I met her at the bus station, and showed her a bright pink winter coat. “Emporium Capwell, nineteen dollars! For you!” I said proudly. Recently, June had been going out in only a light sweater, and I didn’t want her to catch a cold. I held it up to her body, but June pushed it away and stuffed it into the bag. “Ma, I wish you wouldn’t do that in public. Besides, the color’s too bright,” she complained. “Tsk, health is most important,” I said. She got annoyed at this, and simply said, ” Whatever. Let’s just get lunch over with.” How can you rush lunch? Lunch is a meal for social interaction and enjoying the food, not just something to be checked off. We walked and talked, not really listening to each other. Soon we arrived at the markets, and there was on fish. “Nikan!” Look! “50 percent off all seafood, only today!” I dragged her over, and started my regular buying ritual, testing the fish and shouting to the vendors. My daughter stepped away from me and took out her cell phone. “Ma, I wish you wouldn’t do that. It’s embarrassing. Let’s just get to the restaurant.” Sometimes I wish I had disciplined her more. I was always too relaxed when she was younger, I had never taught her respect, when to keep her mouth shut. Now it is too late, I cannot teach her anymore. All I can do is ignore her and carry…

    It was the 11th of August, 2016, and the air was as humid as a hot sauna. Some leaves fell, but the majority of the green and yellow leaves stayed on the tall trees. As I trudged through the side entrance of my school, I spotted a few familiar faces that were smiling at me when I passed by them. I sheepishly waved at them, then joined in my small group of friends. Nervously, I checked my watch to see if the bell was going to ring soon, but we still had 30 minutes until school started. I slowly got a little…

    Earth Day, one of the first national demonstrations against pollution and other violations of the planet’s ecosystem happened on April 21, 1970. Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord A. Nelson in response to the concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air. Until that time, guarding the planet 's natural resources was not part of the nationwide political schema, and the number of activists dedicated to large-scale issues such as industrial pollution was minor. Earth Day originally started off as a day of education about environmental issues, but has now become a worldwide commemorated holiday that is sometimes extended into Earth Week, an entire seven days of events dedicated to green awareness. Earth Day was originally aimed at creating a mass environmental movement and, by raising public awareness of air and water pollution, Nelson had hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight. Now, more than 40 years, one could say that he succeeded in doing just that.…

    Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who perished while serving in the military, a day to honor the soldiers who died while defending America. Our three day weekend in May is a wonderful time to get together with friends and family. To most of us, Memorial weekend it means no school/work and an extra day off. Memorial Day is so much more than a day off to have fun. Most students do not really even understand why they get school off; a lot of adult use this time for cookouts or parties. Memorial Day is a day where we, as Americans, should honor our fallen soldiers.…

    On April 11th, I went to Lafayette Recreation Center to teach 4th and 5th graders about the Lemonade Day. However, the beginning of our trip was not that satisfying. For some reasons, our bus was not prepared that our team had to wait almost an hour in the sun to figure out what we can do. Some students from our team decided to take a cab to arrive on time to keep our promise with children and the others had to go by deans’ cars. Because we were in a car, a small place, we not only discussed about the Lemonade Day but also was able to get to know each other deeply. Luckily, our team was able to Lafayette Recreation Center on time safely. As planned, our team was divided into four different small groups to teach children effectively. Four small groups rotated to teach different children with different materials. After teach children successfully, we were able to get back to school on a bus. In the bus, we discussed about what we liked or disliked about teaching children and how it differed from what we imagined.…

    Her classroom was very welcoming. The walls were filled with masses of pictures encouraging learning consisting of colors, shapes, letters, animals, numbers, and objects. There was a schedule on the board showing the times for each subject and a calendar with the current and previous day’s dates on it. In the back of the room, there was a rocking chair with a large blue rug in front of it, where they do their morning meeting, which I will explain later. Overall, the classroom environment was very homey. Ms. C’s lesson plans were interesting, informative and very well planned out. Every morning, her class held a “morning meeting”. It started with a chosen student that sits in the rocking chair and reads the class rules to her peers, who are sitting in a circle on the rug in front of her. They do a greeting where each student says “Sup (name)” to the next. This got the students involved. It continued until they’d gone around the circle. Next, a question is chosen out of a hat and each student has to go around and answer the question, giving the students a chance to communicate with one another. We learned about this in class when we talked about classroom management and how children being involved ensure that all students are a part of the classroom learning community. “Jane Adamd belives in socialized education where everyone is included in the classroom” (Lecture notes, 9-22). I thought the way that Ms. C involved her students was…

    At the Helping House were was a total of 5 children. There were two girls and three boys. I had asked what the number of students was like during the summer and the total they usually have is about 10. When it came to the numbers of teachers altogether with 5/6 teachers, all were women. Each child was having one on one with one teacher. One girl child was in a play room climbing up ladders and jumping on the trampoline. One boy was outside playing. One of the oldest boys was practicing on his math skills. The youngest boy was waiting on lunch. I observed Mr. Dave’s pre-k class at Montclair pre-school. I arrived at the classroom at 8:00 am to accessed the classroom as well to speak to Mr. Dave. We reviewed the day’s plan as I helped him clean up. While cleaning around the room I noticed how colorful the room was. There were: banners of letters and numbers hanging on the wall, as well as a large alphabet carpet on the floor for the kids to sit on, toys to play with and books to read. As the children arrived, they removed their belongings and placed them in the cubbies. Afterwards, they grabbed their name tags and set their lunchboxes on the lunchbox table. I played with the kids until class started at 9:00…

    We woke up that morning to breakfast that was prepared by her mother Mrs. Gross. We didn’t necessarily have anything planned for the day, just to play games and watch TV. Kennedi and her family were far more fortunate than my family was. Not saying that my family was poor, but Kennedi had everything as a child, the newest phone, or latest shoes that were out, all the way to having a flat screen TV. She lived in Desoto, Texas which isn’t a bad place to live, and has nice homes. However, we spent the first half of the day inside looking and movies and playing simple board games. It was too the point where we got so bored, we went outside looking for other kids to play with.…
