ELL Classroom Observation The main purpose of this paper is to observe and evaluate an ELL lesson using the SIOP (The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) checklist ("Lesson Plan Checklist For The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)"). The emphasis of this observation will be on Lesson Preparation, Building Background, and Comprehensible Input. Using literature as an English learning tool is the lesson that we will be assessing in the paper.
The Lesson The use of literature is an effective tool in an ELL classroom to improve the language skills of the learners ("Adapt A Strategy: Adjusting Lessons For ESL/ELL Students"). The initial discussion actually made the classroom hooked to the story. So 4 points for content objectives. Just like the content objectives, the learning outcomes and the language objectives were also displayed, explained, and reviewed with the students very clearly. Therefore, 4 points for this item as well. The contents of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer were perfectly appropriate for the educational background and the age of the ESL students. They could easily understand the literature. The choice of content was apposite here. Consequently, 4 points for this item also. Supplementary materials were used in this lesson to a high level. ‘Repeat after us’ and ‘Awesome stories’ were the two computer programs that were used as learning aids. The students were taught how to use ‘Thesaurus’ both online and offline to get the meaning of the words that were new to them. Multimedia presentation was also used in the beginning of the lesson to clarify the contents. So, 4 points for the use of supplementary

    Blue made sure to see that the students were receiving positive feedback. When each of the students entered the room, they retrieved their binders and all sat down quietly. Each of the students were very respectful to each other in that whenever someone raised their hand to speak, they were the only ones who spoke. There was no character development program or a posted set of rules displayed in her classroom.     We’ve allowed a natural approach to language instruction to dominate our schools, hoping our English learners 
“will just figure it out.” (SCOE, 2009) This approach suggested by Kevin Clark proposes that teachers explicitly teach ELL by giving them a set of skills. Teacher will have to teach students not just vocabulary, but the sound system of language, the words and their word parts and meanings, and also rules for structuring sentences grammatically. Teaching students from this perspective can support a deeper understanding of the language. When the concept is thoroughly supported by background knowledge, explanation as to why, activities that strengthen skills, and consistency in lesson structure that follows this pattern, students are more likely to understand the concept and create a platform from which to launch higher level thinking and conclusions on following concepts and content area. Students learn more efficiently when they have prior knowledge on a presented concept. If the student can link content to a concept that they gained from previous knowledge on from their own unique background or culture, it will inevitably spark interest in that subject area. By sparking interest the teacher is now adding value to the lesson. Since students synonymize interest with value, the teacher would prove effective. Now a sense of purpose has now been infused into the lesson, and the student/students may begin to contribute more. (NCREL, 1990)…

    One of the U.S. educational challenges of today is meeting the educational needs of the English language learners. This growing diverse population of English learners has to simultaneously learn to build their English language proficiency and the content area within their grade level standard. This makes it a double challenge for them and their teachers.
