A growing trend in todays society known as E-cigarettes are advertised to make people believe that it is better than traditional smoking. People of all ages have switched to e-cigarettes and are in true belief that they are in better health because of the switch. Many believe they help stop the cravings to their nicotine addiction, when in fact many e-liquids contain nicotine. However, many studies have proven that the liquid used in e-cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals along with faults in the e-cigarette device itself. Studies have also revealed many harmful effects that are associated with all the harsh chemicals found in the liquid. The number of young people using e-cigarettes tripled in the past year according to the U.S. CDC. …show more content…
A meta-analysis concluded that 95% of people reported smoking cessation of nicotine rich e-cigarettes of a minimum period of six months. (Rahman, 2015) Nicotine is delivered to the brain by the bloodstream in less than 20 seconds allowing it to effect all parts of the body. The oral cavity is where it all begins with e-cigarettes. All these harmful chemicals enter through the oral cavity and effect it in some way. Nicotine is directly absorbed into the gingiva and mucous membranes, in other words it lays dormant in the mouth. (Wilkins, 2017) Many may believe that the e-cigarettes without nicotine are safe to use, but studies have showed that even without nicotine the chemicals in the liquid is still whats hurting the body. The gingiva and mucous membranes aren’t the only parts of the mouth effected, a study showed that vapor alone with or without nicotine is cytotoxic to oral epithelial cell lines inducing breaks in DNA strands and cell death, this study shows that the benefits do not outweigh the risks . In the study it saw a decrease in the cloning process of epithelial and HNSCC cell lines when nicotine was inhaled from the e-cigarette. (YU, 2017) Therefor, even the liquid that does not contain nicotine is still harmful to the body. There have been reports of severe palatal injuries, oral and nasal injuries.
