The varieties of jazz dance reflect the diversity of American culture. Jazz dance mirrors the social history of the American people, reflecting ethnic influences, historic events, and cultural changes. Jazz dance has been greatly influenced by social dance and popular music. But, like so much that is “from America”, the history of jazz dance begins somewhere else.…

Society today does use dance in religious ceremonies or occasions but not necessarily in a ritualistic form that earlier primitive societies would use per say. However, dance in both today and past societies used basic, everyday motions and movements to form dances, where some of these dance practices are still used even today.…

The elaborate movements, and excited rhythms of the dances that accompanies this music was an act that Europeans could not understand. Along with the singing and dancing used to tell stories during folk tales, the assimilation and revolts through the language barriers, and the creation of the magic of voodoo, Africans were able to obtain strength in their culture that has been passed down through the generations. Even through the will of the Europeans to take every element of their culture from their instruments to the development of the first slave code, African culture was mixed and retained.…
One more example of an activity that shares qualities of African-American dance is cheerleading. Cheerleaders blended different styles of dances in their routines, like street dancing and hip-hop dancing. Their attire are comfortable so they can fluently move around for multi-unit movements. Another example is street performers on The Fremont Street Experience. While I was working for Starbucks, my walk to work involved walking across the Las Vegas Strip to my location that I worked that. I would typically identify different street performers who do hip-hop dancing, break dancing, and even ballet! There was obvious proof that they have thoroughly studied choreographies inspired by African-American dance whenever I spectate these performers.…
In the essay Lovely Hula Hands, Trask shares her emotions and thoughts with the reader about the rape and prostitution of her native land. She explains that different Hawaiian traditions weren’t used for entertainment purposes as they are used today. Trask mentions that many spots that were popular with the locals once, are now resorts that only allow resort residents to enter and use. Trask believes that Hawaii was prostituted by the western culture and sure enough over time the sacredness of the Hawaiian traditions and beliefs, “evaporated”.…
One of the dances I saw was called the Stomp Dance. The meaning behind this dance was that many Native American kids were sent out to boarding schools. Like every other school, this boarding school had a requirement to dress a certain way which did not allow these students to wear their traditional clothing. However, during recess, many of the students would gather together at a school courtyard. They would come in a circle a simple walking around with swaying movements and sing.…

In most dance forms and styles, references are made from historical dances that people may not even be aware of. Dancing is influenced from all sorts of cultures, based on historical events or the region these countries belong to. Through slavery American dance was influenced by African dance, and in turn the African slaves were influenced by the dances already performed in this country. This can be seen in many dance forms created and altered in the United States. One company in particular that draws many references to the African esthetics of dance, as well as historical events is The Dance Theatre of Harlem.…
