The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs is a story of misfortune. The author uses foreshadowing in the story to build tension, and suspense to keep the reader entertained. W.W. Jacob does this by creating certain plot twists, and pacing the story rapidly but still having lots of detail. This book reminds me of being careful for what I wish for and lessons learned. The story begins with the main character, Mr. White, receiving a monkey's paw from a friend.…

Normally children will read because the children’s parents want them to, but in reading children's books people can learn all kinds of lessons and core life values. Both of my groups books were written by the same two authors; Stan and Jan Berenstain they have written all of the books in the series The Berenstain Bears. They are a series of books about a bear family that encounters everyday problems, and solves them. The first book was The Berenstain Bears Pick Up and Put Away. It is time for bedtime in the Berenstain house and all of the cubs toys are still all over the floor. The Parents tell them to put the toys away and head up to bed.The second book was The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble With Parents. For my verbal-visual collage, I chose to read the book The Monkeyface Chronicles by Richard Scarsbrook. Richard is a Canadian author who attended Western University where he earned an Honours BA in history. He also attended U of Ottawa and received his Bachelor of Education. Richard published his book the Monkeyface Chronicles in 2010. I chose to read this book for my project because it was recommended by the library staff at NT. Also, the novel won the Ontario Library Association’s White Pine Award in 2011. The White Pine Award is an annual literature award that has awarded young adult novels since 2002. Other books like Little Brother by Cory Doctorow and Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin have also received White Pine Awards.…

Gone are the days when the children books used to be all peaceful and jolly, playing a key role in encouraging children to be excited and hardworking in schools. In the modern days the books that are trending in the children sections are those that are filled with what the old fashioned parents would term as dirt. These books only serve to impress into the children a sense of violence, darkness and unruly behavior. There is outstanding sense of lack of calm and total chaos in the society as fronted by the authors of the books. These reads instigate the aspects of the thesis statement; ‘the best for kids to read.’…

“There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million,” author Walt Streightiff once stated. In the perspective of the child, no matter from what century the child may have been or is from, the world is filled with mystery and new adventures every day. Children’s literature, since the nineteenth century, has been capturing the world in which children see with their own eyes. The imagination, curiosity, and adventure of children are portrayed by authors who remember what common thoughts and questions they once had at the young age which they set their main characters to be in their stories. Whether it is a chapter book for children ages ten and older, a beginner chapter book for eight…

Before I opened the book, I thought this book is about stories of Chinese people born in the United States, but when I open the book, the first scene is a story that I am so familiar with. When I was a little child, I spend summer breaks in my grandparents’ place in a village. My grandma is traditional old-time Chinese woman: non-literal, and never met my grandpa before the night they were married. She use to take me to the river near her house and teach me how to make hats using “dog tail grass” that grows all over the riverbank. And she would tell me stories, not the prince and princess lived happily ever after kind—the kind my mum would read me before bedtime, but ancient Chinese stories like “All Men Are Brothers” and “Journey to the West”. Monkey king’s uproar in the Heaven Palace is one of my favorites from “Journey to the West”. The way Monkey King is gifted and don’t want to be ordinary fascinated the 7-year-old me, and I’ve always thought maybe that story help planted the seed of curiosity, adventurous and bold in me.…

Six years ago, I walked in to my oldest son’s school eager to participate in their celebration of reading, a week long hiatus from regular school activities in which the children simply read books all day. Parents and members of the community were invited in to read aloud as well. This was the first year my sons were in a public school, and I was so excited to discover that the school district and I shared a very important priority: the love of reading. My son and I had just finished reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry. The book had a profound effect on both of us, eliciting thoughts and insight into the values of our society and the cost of conformity. This was the book I…

The importance of reading is often taken for granted in today’s society. Many children who don’t get the opportunity to read due to low income face the challenges of keeping up with school work. The goal of this paper is to present a plan for a book drive for Lincoln Middle School, a low income middle school in Gainesville, Fl. A problem that many schools may have is trying to find the money to provide books that the kids will be excited about instead of boring textbooks or old books that are falling apart. This book drive will help to increase the literacy rates of children who are struggling in school. A book drive can help to motivate children to read more and introduce them to how fun reading can be. Our goal is to get children on the right track to help them succeed later in life. By introducing children to reading and its importance now, it reduces the risk of them dropping out of school and ending up unemployed and on the streets. According to the National Center for Family Literacy, Research Facts and Figures, “children who lack early exposure to reading struggle academically, tend to suffer from low self-esteem, and are at much higher risk of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and delinquency.” Having parents that can’t read increases the chances that their children will also struggle with reading, thus continuing the cycle of illiteracy (Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program). Not having the luxury of reading or being read to as a child can cause these problems. Our solution is to provide books to these students to stop these problems. According to the Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program website, “reading aloud to children is the single most effective parent practice for enhancing language and literacy development” (Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program). Simply reading to a child can have a big impact on their literacy development and later on their academic career. According to an…

Later in the story Jay Berry finds out the monkeys came from a crashed circus train and the owners are giving a reward to whoever can safely return them. Jay Berry then decides to catch the monkeys but soon realizes how hard it is and that he may not get the pony and .22 caliber shotgun he’s been wanting. When Jay Berry finally catches the monkeys with the help of his grandpa, instead of spending the money on the pony and caliber, Jay Berry gives the money to his twin sister to fix her crippled leg and give her the option to finally be able to walk.…

I would like to mention that for my parents, especially for my dad, reading has always been a favorite hobby. Partly due to this fact, I have always received positive emotions while reading. If both of one of the parents often read, the likelihood that their child will want to receive positive emotions from this activity is very high. On the other hand, if parents do not read but require a child to read too much, the reading can become a field of resistance between the child and his or her parents. Reading has always been an easy and pleasant leisure for my parents. I am immensely grateful to my father who was an influential literacy sponsor and still has the biggest impact on me. I am used to see my dad who is a cardiologist working on his own development and expanding his knowledge in many fields. We have a family tradition to read a science book every month and later discuss some of its points together. I find such kind of pastime to be truly useful and…
