Dwarves vs. Dragon: The dwarves and the dragon’s conflict goes way back. When Thorin and Balin were still young, Smaug killed (and ate) their kingdom’s citizens and took their gold. The danger the dragon caused was extreme therefore they could never return safely. This created a hate that ran deep both on sides.

Bilbo vs. Gollum: When Bilbo was lost in the goblin caves, he stumbled on a ring. The ring turned out to be Gollum’s invisibility ring, and Bilbo having this ring almost got him killed by Gollum’s rage. This adds suspense and excitement to the story and is a major conflict in The Hobbit.

Spiders: The spiders took the dwarves as captives, and if it weren’t for Bilbo fighting all of them off, the dwarves would have been dead. By using his invisibility ring, Bilbo taunted the spiders, distracting them from the dwarves then released the dwarves by cutting them out of the spiders webs. This conflict displays how you can use intelligence and quick judgement to get out of a bad situations.

Dwarves and Bilbo vs. Mirkwood Forest: The Mirkwood Forest formed many problems for the dwarves and Bilbo. They were low on food, confined to a narrow path, and there was no sunshine. Eventually, the group strays from the path and can’t find their way back. In addition, the Mirkwood Forest is very large. Even if they didn’t leave the path, Bilbo and the dwarves would have died from starvation.

Dwarves and Bilbo vs. River: In The Hobbit, there is a river that has magical properties that will force you to fall asleep you if you touch it which causes Bilbo and the dwarves to slow down on their journey. Not only did they have to take time to get a boat to cross it, Bombur fell in and the had to carry him a long distance because he couldn’t wake

“Soon the goblins had a ring of smoke and flame all round the dwarves, a ring which they kept from spreading outwards; but it closed slowly until the running fire was licking the fuel piled under the trees. Smoke was in Bilbo’s eyes, he could feel the heat of the flames( even though he was so high up in the trees); and through the reek he could see the goblins dancing round and round in a circle like people round a midsummer bonfire. Outside the ring of dancing warriors stood the wolves at a respectful distance watching and waiting to devour the first person that dropped dead out of the treetops. Bilbo could hear the goblins beginning a horrible song, and with that the flames were under Gandalf the wizards tree. In a moment it caught the others and went up like a rocket, when it was just beneath Bilbo’s, he closed his eyes, ready to die when...” As it can be seen Biblo and company were in many tight spots throughout this adventure, and he could not have done it all on his own. That is where Bilbo had to use the three themes of luck, courage and good sense to overcome evil and stay alive.…

Bilbo’s quick thinking and cunning intelligence plays an integral part in his success in becoming a hero. Early on Bilbo encounters a creature by the name of Gollum whose intent as we come to find out, is to eat Bilbo. In an effort to buy more time, Bilbo enters a game of riddles with the creature of the dark. Both agree that if Bilbo should win, Gollum will escort Bilbo to the exit. However, should Gollum win, Bilbo’s fate is sealed as Gollum’s next meal. After exchanging numerous blows, it is Bilbo’s wit that prevails by asking the question “What have I got in my pockets?” (Tolkien, 78) Similar to Bilbo’s encounter with Gollum is his confrontation with Smaug. This time however, Bilbo is facing a far more formidable opponent. Smaug attempts to lure Bilbo into his hall by telling Bilbo that there is plenty of treasure to go around. Bilbo however, having knowledge of dragon-lore sees through Smaug’s frivolous attempt…

His decisions, personality, and sense of morality makes him the hero he is without being the stereotypical warrior. Bilbo is a small hobbit with a huge heart, who changes the world differently than any other hero. He chooses the life of a savior rather than a warrior. He doesn't fight his battles through sheer strength. He shows compassion, innocence, and ethics in developing into the unique hero that Tolkien intended. Bilbo represents a hero that will ultimately contribute in shaping an ideal and peaceful world in a lighthearted and caring…

They form internally or externally and challenge almost everybody. The accusation of fraud in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz strikes the Wizard with conflict when he is forced to make a hard decision and how that one decision can either resolve or exacerbate the situation.…

One of the most prominent uses of Beowulf by Tolkien is the role of the monster, Dragon. In Beowulf, the dragon guards a horde of treasure in a hidden mound. A thief from Geatland steals the dragon’s goblet, which enrages the Dragon and endangers the entire clan to be put on fire. Similarly, in The Hobbit, when Bilbo Baggins musters his courage to enter the Dragon’s lair, his first instinct is to “grasp a great two-handled cup, as heavy as he could carry…” (Tolkien 198). Bilbo’s success in stealing the cup delights the dwarves, but infuriates the Dragon to burn out the entire Lake Town. The correspondence of the Dragons demonstrates the impact the folklore has on Tolkien’s writing.…

Luck plays a huge role in this novel because without luck Bilbo wouldn’t have survived many of the situations he got into. Many of the situations that Bilbo and his friends got into would not have happened had it have not been for bad luck…
